Evening all

Ive got a metallic rattle coming from the car whilst coasting in gear it disappears when the clutch is applied im leaning towards clutch release bearing ?

Whats people's thoughts before I pay out

To be honest, I have never heard a clutch release bearing rattle. The spring firmly pushes the bearing against the pressure fingers of the clutch.

A worn clutch release bearing usually results in a rumbling, grinding, squealing or whining sound since it is almost always the bearing part that wears/fails. In most case the sound also changes when light pressure is applied to the clutch pedal.

Since this car has the Ford/Getrag (now Magna) MX65 transmission, I would not rule out the transmission yet. This transmission is often called the chocolate gearbox for a reason. It was designed to be cheap to manufacture and not to be durable or over dimensioned. This transmission can officially handle a maximum input torque of 215 Nm which is very close to the 210 Nm of torque that the 125 HP 1.0 EcoBoost MHEV outputs. Especially since Ford is usually quite conservative with power and torque figures (most engines develop more power and torque as Ford specified)

Unfortunately, this transmission is well-know to have quite a few problems. Premature failure is quite common. In my opinion this transmission should never have been combined with the 1.0 EcoBoost MHEV.

I suggest having the problem diagnosed properly. If that does not indicate the cause of the problem, I suggest to just remove the transmission, to be able to inspect the clutch, release bearing, flywheel, etc. Once removed the input shaft of the transmission can also be checked for excessive play.
