Fiesta Mk6 Zetec Rough Idle Problem

Hi there, i have a rough idle problem on my fiesta mk6 zetec which is a 1.4 where the revs go up and down whilst idling. I have changed the spark plugs, leads, coil pack and fuel filter but still no change. However whilst i was having a look around i noticed that there was a split in the pipe going from the inlet manifold to the PCV valve, so i got a replacement pipe and fitted it. But then the car would not start, so i put the old pipe back on and the car starts but still with a rough idle??? It seems that i need a hole in the pipe for the car to run, this cant be right and i am pulling my hair out because of this. Could someone please help me to diagnose the problem please??
