Checked my average MPG today, 26.8.... Wtf? I don't over accelerate. My EcoDriving scores all 5 star...

Can this be explained to be fair I topped up two days ago and reset the TRIP comp.

but still this is the lowest I've ever had it. I only do town driving. Barely see motorways or open roads...

Last tank of petrol was around 30.8MPG....

Previous MPG's from mainly town driving range from 28.8-36....

It's poor to be honest. On a full tank I have about 250-300 miles - empty.

How are you calculating the average m.p.g. ?

Brim to brim method or trip computer ?

  • I drive mine quite quickly most the time. Mainly around town with a 10 mile stretch on an A road to and from work. It's a Zetec 1.0 (100PS) EcoBoost and we get 44.6 MPG. We can easily get that to 46 i

Whatever the trip computer says. Reset it after every refuel.

Probably not very accurate - use the brim to brim method over several tankfuls & i expect the m.p.g. figures will be better :)

Alright buddy, will do. Cheers. Brim to brim method? Explain please mate?

This is where you fill up your tank and reset the trip, then next time you fill up you do the same and record the miles and fuel used. Then you can calculate the mpg more accurately than the trip computer, or put the numbers into one of the many apps available that can work it out for you.

My mpg is going down as usual for this time of year, last fill up was 33 mpg actual (brim to brim) but the trip computer showed 36.5. This was mostly commuting on quite a short journey. After a 1 hour motorway journey mostly at 60 mph the trip showed 50 mpg :)

As Phil states - although ignore the trip computer

I'd brim the tank, note the mileage ( A ) then drive until the fuel light illuminates & brim it again & note the mileage again ( B ) & the amount of fuel required - then subtract A from B & divide by fuel used.

So, for example, 300 miles driven divided by 45 litres used = 30.3 M.P.G. :)

If you've just topped up and reset 2 days ago it's not really accurate enough to get an average MPG yet, as all that could mean is you might not have been driving long enough to let the engine warm up (which uses more fuel to warm the engine/you/the car interior and defrost/demist windows) and you had a number of start stop traffic on your journeys which would bring any good economy car down to lower than expected figures.

The winter really makes a difference on economy to what you get during the warmer months, my diesel Alfa doing the same 40 mile communte is roughly 8-10mpg better in the summer compared to winter.

Hmm I told it to go to the last page of this thread and it took me to the second last page so it looks like you've already had answers and I'm behind the game :P

Bit behind mate, but still appreciate it! And I know the fact that it's been two days ago that I topped up and showing low AVG MPG. and the cold months don't help buddy, Just annoying when I barely get above 32MPG (trip comp) on better days with less than half of a tank in. But I've been answered now anyways😏

Appreciated though Michael.

Just wanted to share this with you all. I've never been one for supermarket fuel & this backs up my thinking.

In the comments it states that the garage in question closed the pumps and had specialist vans from several large companies the next day.

It's not the first case about tesco either :)

^ That makes me glad I always use V-Power. Probably best to stick to good fuel brands even if it's a few p more per litre.

I think this has more to do with poor tank housekeeping at the service station as all branded or unbranded fuel in the U.K. comes from the same 6 or 7 refineries & distribution depots.

That's what I was thinking but I have no idea what the "housekeeping" involves.

Phil - It's basically keeping the underground fuel tanks at the service stations & possibly the fuel tankers clean & free from sludge & other contaniments such as water that can cause the issues that Keiran has highlighted

I have wondered this but....

In my Fiesta if I fill up at a Shell or BP or Morrisons my MPG is high and lasts well over 400 miles but morrisons well my MPG drops and I get 350/70 miles.

I dont know why but I hate morrisons fuel! Never lasts as long!

I've used supermarket fuel once. It was Tesco in my 2-stroke. 10 miles later the engine siezed resulting in me fully rebuilding the engine.. that's what initially put me off

I'm fairly confident that even basic branded fuels have additives that unbranded fuels do not - obviously the likes of V Power etc have even more additives - hence the additional cost.

It is these additives that no doubt add extra m.p.g. by enabling a cleaner burn & consequently produce more energy.

It remains a fact that all fuel in the U.K. comes from the same few depots & it all has to meet or exceed the relevant B.S.

Anyone that lives near these few depots will see tankers from Tesco's Morrisons etc lined up with the B.P. & Shell tankers all being filled from the same dispensers.

The unknown additives are added to certain tankers & not others.

Poor fuel from certain petrol stations has been reported before & in nearly all cases poor housekeeping of the tanks at the station were found to be the cause of substandard / contanimated fuel

I think it's pot luck really Kieran - I've put all kinds of fuel in my last 3 cars over the last 9 years I've never had an issue yet - but i acknowledge that some people do.

As is the case with all car forums - we rarely hear of good news !

I stuck vpower in it the other day and it appears to be reading higher mpg by 2 or 3 in the lower 40s now was about 38 before could be engine wearing in but my routes and driving have not differed at all.

I've been using v power for a few weeks now and my mpg has gone up to 44mpg from 42

Only had my car 3 days so won't state my avg (although last time I looked trip said 40avg)

But want to join in on the supermarket fuel debate. I stopped using asda/tesco about 5 years ago. Ran a full tank and found I was getting 20/30 miles extra using shell over asda. And the price was either the same or a penny more a litre

There seen to be a lot of mixed results with the 125/Eco and me not having the Eco its making me a bit confused on them.

I have the 1.6 Ti-vct and on a 7 day week say with 5 days of very local stop/start like not even a mile there and back then 2 long-ish rides

of about 40 miles there and back and average it out in say 7 or so days i get around 35mpg and that's a nice 30/60 mph, just local its a

bit less say around 10mpg less, this is off trip and online from a half tank fill up like what i do on miles from half a tank to full and down to half.

I would of thought 40+ on a Eco for very local at the min as my car don't even get hot how local i go most times, good topic to read and think.

My mum gets 39 MPG out of her 1.0 Focus primarily around town, so people must be driving their Fiestas like they stole them to get lower than that, lol.

Agree with you alex, heres my focus  consumption currently, just  filled up and the proper consumption calculated is slighty lower at 52.6.
