How To Install A Conical Air Filter To A Zetec S?

Featured Replies

Thanks for the reply, appreciate the input!

How much we talking for one of them? Also any recommended sites to buy them from (should the price be right!)?

Thanks

The k&n one is usually £10 less for the panel filter.

Short and simple answer dont bother. You will get less power, less mpg and devalue your car. Because 1 look at a cane filter and people with think its been chavved. My advise as a professional mechan

You know your stuff!

Think I will just get the pipercross air filter thing and a back box.

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/replacement-elements/car/ford/fiesta-mk5/2007/1-6/pipercross-performance-replacement-element

With P and P is £37

Then as far as a back box goes are there any that you have found?

From what I have found these two look okay...dont they?

Appreciate the help :D

No worries, the second one with the 3" tip is stainless steel, with it being 3" it does not look too "weedy"(like a "peashooter") but not "over the top/ too big for the car" a single outlet gives the most amount of flow for the lightests weight - will require a bit of work, it says ite road legal/ MOT-able too - you could buy this back-box and the pipercross filter, - still have change from £100, not bad!

Im gonna craft me own system for the Van. 3" from the cat back and twin exits at the rear! OOOOSH! Ill have to brush up on my Tig welding LOL

Thanks so you'd go for the circular one instead of the oval ish one?

Think that does make more sense to just get a cheap universal one to save myself some money!

Everything looks fine with it right?

Thanks :D

Hope I'm not too late with posting this, but I'll be purchasing one of these soon for my ZS;

Seems a little bit cheaper than demontweeks etc. I'd like to get a new exhaust backbox too but I plan on keeping it looking standard, so will just go for a panel filter I reckon :) there is a simple mod you can do to get a bit more noise too, by 'de-restricting' your air-box where the panel filter sits in, by removing the resonator that sits in there. Unfortunately I haven't yet found a decent guide online to show how its done! If I find one I'll post it here :)

And to answer your other question, I have the same shape fiesta as you, mine is on a 56 plate (06/07) and as far as i'm aware it's known as the Mk6.5 (basically a slight facelift over the mk6, most noticeable alterations are the headlights and tail-lights). Hope that helps :)

Also, just to add; you asked about whether the backbox would fit ok or would you need to cut the back bumper. I had thought this when I first got my ZS, but the best solution I thought of was to replace the black plastic section on the rear bumper with the one from the ST fiesta. I'm assuming it would just swap over easily enough, shouldn't cost much to buy one from a ford parts dealer (or scrappy) and would save you hacking into your current bumper :) plus, if/when you come to sell the car and wanted to return the car to standard then you can just swap the standard Zetec S bits back on.

Hope that helps!

Another cheap way of making the intake louder is to drill the bottom of the airbox full of holes - this was popular "back in the day", again, you often loose power

the airbox can be de- lugged and gas flowed -

Thanks for the replies guys! I dont understand what that picture is of "feet on the table",

I would of thought an ST bumber would be a fair bit expensive TomTom, should be ordering the back box and filter stuff on Monday (touch wood) and then I can report how it looks / fits!

I don't mean a full back bumper mate, as said just the plastic trim on the lower half of the bumper should be all you need :)

  • Author

Ah right I see.

When it comes I will take it to my local mechanic and see if he thinks it will fit as is or if I will need to adjust it

I!

Removing the webs in the airbox/ gas flowing the airbox, (airbox is louder, flows more air/ more power/ does not draw warm air loosing power like underbonnet cone filter )

These are mondeo turbo-diesels, the same princepals apply, in fact the flow is even more important in an NA (naturally asperated/ non turbo) because there is no turbo to force the air through

its "FOCA" "feet on the table" is the avatar title :)

I knew that...

Why does the bottom one have cob web things on it? I literally have been comparing for 5 minutes and I have no idea what I'm looking at, I know its the air filter!

I knew that...

Why does the bottom one have cob web things on it? , I know its the air filter!

Thats how ford made it! you could say it was to strengthen the airbox but the airbox is fery strong anyway, the webs are probably to break up the sound the intake makes/ make it quieter, removing them helps the flow of air through the airbox, by helping to reduce turbulence and reducing the surface area of the inside of the airbox - overall this helps the velocity (speed) of the air flowing through the airbox while reducing the drag, often helping the engine produce more power and rev higher

It will be louder though

if you look at the modified airbox, it also has orange filler on the exit of the airbox this forms a "bellmouth" / rounds off the sharp corners on the exit of the airbox

A good tuner will look at an induction system and spot the "bottlenecks". often, the restriction is not the filter itself, but elswhere in the induction system

its very difficult to improve on a modern induction system, ford know what they were doing, but had to keep the noise down, i did not/ wanted it to have a little bit of noise (helps drown out the noise of the tappets)

So inside the air box is all that web stuff? Looked at my friends peugot the other day and he didn't have any of that in there!

I'm hoping a new panel filter and a new back box will make it sound better anyway, just got to hope everything gets sorted on the service on monday!

Then I can start spending!

Update, I bought the piper air filter- can't notice too much difference, it feels nippier but it could be in my head!

I got this exhaust

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160856622222?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Which does not fit!

Basically the join onto the rest of the exhaust is high, so to go straight through would leave a huge hole high up in my bumber and look crap! A kink pipe would work but would leave very little ground clearance!

The input pipe from the rest of the exhaust has to be higher than the out pipe, cutting the rear fascia bit would be fine but I would like to get the ST thing like TomTomZS said, so any links to where to get that would be great!

The back box I need to get will have to look like this

http://www.teamtorquesteer.co.uk/category-1064/fiesta-mk6-121416-cobra-sport-rear-box.html

With the pipes at different heights!

Any links for anything similar would be great!

Does it matter that it says 1.25 when mine is a 1.6?

Also what do you think of this one?

http://sniperexhaust.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=35_49&products_id=133

Looks loke a good one, its got a stainless steel tip and should fit straight on

I thought the one you bought would have needed a bit of "tweeking" but would save you money than getting one made specifically for the car

Ah right but it would be okay?

Debating this now-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Fiesta-Mk6-1-6-16v-Sportex-Exhaust-inc-Race-Tube-Single-3-/350804676557?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item51ad968fcd

I remember someone on here said about getting a whole new system that would improve the sound and performance alot- well would this do it?

Seems reasonable price too!

It doesn't say road legal but I would imagine it is.

Thoughts? :)

Its not bad, but its not mandrel bent (turns "squash" down) and its not stainless

this one -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIESTA-MK6-ZETEC-S-EXHAUST-MILLTEK-1-6-16V-CAT-BACK-NON-RES-3-5-POLISHED-TAIL-/330654399150?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AFiesta&hash=item4cfc89baae#ht_6697wt_879

is a fair bit more expensive but its 304 aircraft grade stainless steel and its mandrel bent (stays the same diameter on the bends) as well as being 60mm (up from 50mm - should help power/ revs/ response) they both have the middle box deleted which will make it louder/ save weight and help the gas-flow a bit Millteck is a well-known, established and respected maker

Cobra -

As i suspected it looks like the 1.2, 1.4 and the 1.6 have the same fitting, according to the above link

A complete system for 105 quid -

But I am a bit worried that it says not tested for road noise level

• Designed for Race and Track Use

Not Noise Level Tested for Road Use

• Buy Now

Yes, its a shame about that, i wonder if its just to "cover their backs" or if its really loud, you might need to get one with a middle silencer to get a quiet one

It should still pass a UK MOT though

Ive got a "straight through" system (with a single "straight through" muffler), with it having a turbo it really cuts the noise down, an NA (naturally asperated/ non turbo) needs a bit more silencing unfortunately

  • Author

I don't know too much on cars, but comparing the 105£ system and the original one I posted, the 105 one looks alot louder because it doesn't have a silencer box thing...that's the complicated terminology!

The Miltek one is too expensive for me, I like the cobra box but that is just a box for the same price as the box and system which I think would be a bit better?

What do you think?

I think you get what you pay for (more or less) if you want to keep it fairly quiet you could get the cobra one, its stainless steel and you have a choice of 4 ends, you could always replace the middle bit in the future

Okay thanks mate!
