USB port?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am new to this forum and am thinking of ordering a Fiesta. I am looking at the 1.4 Zetec 5 Door petrol. I am just wondering if the USB port comes as standard or is it just the aux inputs? I have read conflicting articles online and thought someone on here would be able to set the record straight =). Hope someone can help, Chris

It is NOT standard, you need to specify it and pay extra for it.

ah ok, is it just part of the £200 extra? How does the ipod work without the usb?

To get USB in the Zetec, you MUST buy "bluetooth + voice control + USB" Which is £200. If you push your dealer you might get it for free.

Edit:

An ipod uses the AUX port to carry sound over to the cars radio system. USB will allow you to use the stearing wheel controls to change track etc

cheers, thanks for your help. i think it may well be a deal breaker. just out of interest, how much should i be paying for that model? found such a variety of prices online.

The Fiesta 1.4 Petrol Zetec, with out any extras comes out as £11572 on HERE and £10,216 on Deal Drivers HERE. Hope these link give an idea of best prices.

You have to get the USB. Worth every £££!

If you going to use an iPod in the car it makes it soo simple to use. Unless your like me and have fair to much music :)

Don't know if i'm just thick but i've just received the ipod connector for my car. It connects via the AUX in the car to the earphone socket of the iPod. Now what I want to know will it charge the iPod or do I need the USB connection for that? I know I need the Y connector to see my tunes on the screen and to change my tunes with the toggle thing on the steering wheel but what else am I missing out on by not getting the USB?

I havent got my car yet to test it out. Just buying toys for my baby!

Lol, Me too.

This cable (mini jack to mini jack) will only transfer the audio (not the data about audio files or power). So consuquently will not charge the Ipod.

However the Y cable has the USB cable too, so it can charge the IPOD and also transfer the data. The ford Y cable is encrypted so that the correct information is taken from the IPOD and displayed on the screen in the correct way. The IPOD can only be controled through the USB cable as the USB cable has the ability to send data back to the IPOD in order to tell the device to change track etc.

The mini jack to mini jack will still allow the volume to be changed however, as the speakers can be turned up or down, regardless of the device. (if that makes sence?)

To answer your quesiton, NO the IPOD will not charge without the USB cable.

Thanks JAR! GRRRRRR!!! That means that I'll have to get the USB thingy then. The iPod I was intending to use is an old one and the battery life is practically zero.

Or...... buy a new iPod! I've not got the USB, probably wish I had, but I have the music on shuffle anyway.

I've got a 2gb old nano I wanted to use in the car and I have my 8gb iPod Nano I use in the gym (cos its got the Nike+ thing added) and I've got an iPod touch which I dont really want to carry around or leave in the car so currently I think I will use the old one. I've called the dealers to get the Bluetooth USB option added and he said he would ring the company on Monday and see how far down the line they are with the build. Well what he told me earlier this week was that they werent building it till 24th April so if they have started it already - YEAH!!!

Otherwise, I'll just patiently wait and see what turns up.

Just for everyones concideration - there is a thing called the iTrip which plugs into any Ipod/Iphone and sends the music through a specified FM radio frequancy. Now you can't controlt he tracks or anything and it has the same functionality as the mini jack to mini jack, but it allows the Ipod to be hiden away in the glovebox. This may be a posibility for some of you without the USB?

They can be brought from PC World for £25 and come in black or white :D

I dont mean to be nasty :) but these have been out for years! :)

But very good if you dont have any other way.

Lol I know they have. But I was just saying as some people have said they didn't have the USB port and didn't want to leave their Ipods on show - A good alternative.

Very true!

However the Y cable has the USB cable too, so it can charge the IPOD and also transfer the data. Ive ordered bluetooth without the USB but just gone out and bought myself an iTouch (go figure). So just to clarify; if i was to buy a Y cable Im still able to change the tracks from both the steering wheel and using voice control?

Nope, afraid not.

The Y cable plugs into both the mini jack and the USB port. Its the USB functionality which allows the iPod to change tracks. The cable simply connects the USB to the iPod.

here is a description of the two parts for those who still don't quite understand:

Mini Jack: The mini jack sends over the music / audio waves to the car. The car picks the music up and plays it through the speakers, which can have their volume ajusted. The car cannot send any data to change the track or receive data regarding the track information.

USB: This will allow data to be sent from the Ipod regarding the track / artist etc and sent from the car changing the track etc. Withhout the USB port the Ipod will not be able to have its tracks changed or the information displayed on screen.

The Y cable simpy connects the USB AND Mini Jack from the car to the Ipod. The Y cable consists of a mini jack cable (to transfer the audio) and the USB (to transfer the data for that audio). Its the USB which allows all the cool functionality.

The bluetooth is a seperate issue. It allows your phone (some phones at least) to connect to the car allowing features like voice control, ringing from in car etc. It doesn't allow an Ipod to change tracks etc etc. Ipods don't have bluetooth.

Basically, If you want the info on screen and want to be able to change tracks etc you NEED the USB port in the car. The cable is just a connection (although it's encoded too so you can't just juse any old USB cable - crafty ford!).

Hope this helps.

where do you get these Y cables from? pics of the usb / aux section of the fiesta would be handy

I dont have an ipod but I do have a USB Stick and I find it absoloutly fantastic! Well worth it and loads better than messing around with an Ipod =)
