Not very good MPG

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I’m new to this forum so sorry if this subject has already come up and sorry for the long post, here goes.

We recently bought a 2007 fiesta Ghia 1.6 TDCI with 16765 miles on the ODO. We bought the car on the amazing MPG quotes the salesman gave us, I do a mixer of town and motorway driving altogether 30 miles (16miles on the Motorway).

At present the fuel computer is showing 48.6mpg and when travelling along the motorway at steady 70mph it drops to 48 and sometime 47.5 mpg. I have returned the car and they have attached some sort of computer looking for some sort of error codes but they say there are no errors so that’s how it is they say!!!

I am absolutely applaud at this! how they can quote such ridicules figures also the salesman said he had a TDCI fiesta for a sort period as his company car and he was getting 60mpg. I’ve tried different driving styles and have managed to get it up to 49.2mpg but nowhere near 60 or acclaimed 55-72mpg, when I fill the tank it says 470miles to empty and I get about 400-410 before the warning light comes on.

I have reset the computer many times but no luck also the mpg computer takes a very long time before the reading gets up to the 40s unlike the one on our friends focus which constantly updates when your are driving. All in all I’m disappointed with Ford and these figures. Very much like to hear from other members with TDCI engines.

Thanks, Sara

Sorry to disappoint you but ford have no control over fuel figures, the mpg is worked out by the government in laboratory conditions so will never replicate. If u look elsewhere in the forum I have posted the URL whee u can see how the figures are calculated. Ford are only quoting figures they have been told.

Varous things determine fuel consumption .... Road surface, driving with windows open, air con usage increases fuel consumption, weather, tyres, underinflated tyres etc.

Can I just point out that Fords figure for your car is 60mpg based on a constant speed of 56mph. As you are never doing a constant 56mph due to acceleration and braking even on the motorway you are never going to achieve their figures on the road. You state your driving style is 70mph on the motorway which means your speed is 14mph above the speed for optimum economy. They get away with it cos their figures are true. Sadly their figures come from testing them on test tracks where things like other traffic and hills etc dont come into the equation. Something else to consider, the computers in cars are not accurate, far from it and should only be used as a guide. You also state you get only 410 miles before the light comes on. Bear in mind when the light comes on theres still close on 2 gallons of fuel in your tank. In your case thats 100 miles of travelling based on your figures. By my calculations thats a total mileage of 510 miles per tank. Higher than 470 the computers telling you.

On a plus my focus TDDi returns 60mpg on a motorway journey with speeds of 60-65mph and I can get 550 miles from a tank no problem. Solution sell your fiesta and buy a focus.

Hi SierraYankee99,

Is that the 1.6 110bhp Focus as I’ve heard that's the same engine except mine puts out 89bhp? Also to do with gear ratio on your focus, mine sit at around 2500 rpm at 65 mph. the Focus sits at under 2000rpm at the same speed. You are right the Focus would have been a better motorway cruiser.

I think it is the same engine. The only difference being the map on the ECU and although I've never seen the 1.6 TDCi in the fiesta I'd hazard a guess its missing an intercooler which the focus will have. I know this is what they did when mine was new. My Dads Fiesta has the same engine as mine, his puts out 75bhp mines 90bhp. The differences are his hasnt got an intercooler and its got a smaller turbo.
