Mk3 Mondeo Tdci Engine Swap

Featured Replies

Hi, just bought an immaculate 56 mondeo tdci titanium x with a blown engine euro 4 125ps . I have an 02 tdci 130 euro 3 with an excellent engine,Has anybody done a sucessfull transplant as most forumns i read people have had probelms. Our is it better to get the same age engine. There seems to be a lot of experts about who havent done this transplant. cheers john

I can safely say I have never done this transplant lol, however, you will certainly have issues. as you have a euro 4 car there, with sensors that wont exist on the euro 3. Plus you would need to change the ECU, recode the injectors, deal with the additional sensors etc.

It would be easier if you were to buy a replacement engine from the same euro spec car, so the same or similar age mondeo would be the least painful way of fixing the car up and will probably save you more money in the long run, as labour rates at a garage for an engine transplant, let alone diagnosis of these problems will cost you a lot. And if you are going to do it yourself, you will need a lot of time and could well end up getting very miffed with it when it doesn't work :p

Hi.yeah i'm aware of the probelms. I was hopeing to swap turbo/manifolds/flywheels/gearbox etc from 56 euro 4 to 02 euro 3 head and block. Any body done it ?

Not I, and I dont recall hearing of anyone doing it myself, but hopefully there is someone out there who can come forward with advice!

You will need the ECU from the engine you are fitting, as the other ECU is incompatible and the ECU that came with the engine will be coded to the injectors

With the Engine block, injectors and ECU from the 02 TDCI Euro 3 you will need the matching turbo (Euro3 VNT with pnumatic actuator) and ancillaries, sensors, etc, etc

You will also need the BCU (body control unit)from the 02 TDCI Euro 3 and the keys and locks

Even with the same age engine you would have to do similar things,(with the ECU matching the injectors and the BCU matching the keys etc) but the matching uncoded parts would not have to be switched (eg - sensors, turbo etc)

Euro4 TDCIs were modified to Euro 3 to get rid of the (unreliable) electronic actuator

And years ago the Streetperformance TDCI 2.2 was changed from a Euro4 to Euro3 so that it could be tuned for more power & torque
