Hi all,

Have got a 1.6tdci fiesta 2006 with 106k on the clock, and the gear box is really stiff to change gear. I have tried topping up the oil (8mm hex bolt behind the selectors) and covered everything in wd40 to try and free it up but it will not loosen at all. It seems to get worse once hot, but it is still very hard work when is cold and the engine off. Clutch seems to be ok, and once the gear has been selected there is no jumping out or grinding etc..

Is there anyone who can point me in the next direction for this one??

Is there a drain plug for the gear box on these ? If so, most will have a magnetic plug, you could check this for metal filings, if there is some in there, this could indicate wear of the gears, and a not so cheap repair. Has the problem been there a while and getting worse, or has it happened overnight ?

Hi i experienced this in sons 55 plate zetec 1.25 climate mk6 where gears become very stiff & hard to engage in gears. It'll be your gear selecter.take it to mechanic who'll check it out. My mate who is mechanic & mot tester at ford dealer greased it all up & was ok

The plug is clean when I take it out, also the bit of fluid that runs out doesn't contain any metal.

The car has been stood for about 6 months until we sorted an injector fault. Was fine when we parked up, now it us running again, the nix gas gone bad. I have done a fair few miles since start up but it has not eased.

As suggested above, possibly the selector, though I would have thought that if you have given this a good dose of WD40 it would have at least eased up a little ?

I thought if could be the selector as everything else is fine..

I will see what it is like tomorrow once the WD sets in. I will look in to some selectors just incase they are knackered!

Wd40 cleans grease away. Grease itself is best.

no because it'll remove any lubrication and make it worse. Just grease it.

The WD-40 worked a bit for this morning, but has now stopped again. As you said, I think it has taken the original grease off, so will get some sort of lubricating spray or grease slapped on it this weekend I think.

If its a plastic join of some kind use silicone spray.

Just an update, bought some of the 3in1 silicone spray lubricant, and it has worked wonders, feels almost perfect now. I think I will just keep putting it on for a few days to make sure there is loads on everything, but first tests seem to be great, thank you all for the guidance!!
