stanman1
HI ALL, does anyone know if it is possible to fit a second hand diesel injection pump to a 2001 1.8 di fiesta. the car devloped a terrible knocking noise and after stripping the engine to bits and not finding any mechanical faults, the concensus of opinion now points to the pump over fueling on number one cylinder!!! any help would be appreciated, Regards, Stanman :)
mick85
What makes u think pump have u checked injectors when noise occur an describe sound how much of engine u strip An why did u strip it Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
stanman1
started off knocking like injector knock top end of engine. cracked no 1 and noise went off ! tried all the rest no stopping knock.carried out compression test 400 pounds on all bores had injector checked and reconned. no change. checked valve clearances all ok. checked timing ok but changed belt and tensioner anyway. no change. removed sump stripped out big end all ok. stripped off head no witness marks on head at all. pulled out piston on no one small end ok. negagative piston slap. i have had second third and fourth opinions now on this and the only thing left now is she is over fuelling on no 1. i have read in haynes manual 2nd handpump would need setting up with proper ford equipment i want to know if there is a way round this somehow! its absolutely blown my mind that there are no witness marks anywhere. the noise is so loud people stop and turn round when i drive it down the road.regards, stanman
mick85
Did u check the gudgeon pin on piston as far as I aware u can get diesel specialist to decode module part so u don't need program keys but they be definitely people u need talk to Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
stanman1
engineers checked every thing today they dont know whats going on either. ive been round diesels for years but never had anything like this before! the van is pretty old and not worth fortunes my mates think im mad taking it this far! i think a diesel specialist would want a fortune to do the recoding im looking for a cheap get out of jail job, regards, stanman
mick85
Unfortunately I would have to agree with ur friend don't think there's an easy fix unless u get scrap car an take all components out that an put in Urs why u think noise top end have u got recording of sound Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
stanman1
i dont have a recording but it is def top end .sounds like piston hitting valves or a very noisy small end [gudgeon pin] ! its def not either ! no witness marks. how do i load a photo on here i can show the crowns of the pistons when the head came off, regards, stanman
mick85
I not to sure mate how upload pictures but maybe search some the threads I sure someone else can shed some light really strange wats condition of bores did u check crankshaft bearing clearances any play in crank shaft it's very strange one did u use stethoscope when tryin determine noise so u said when u cracked injector open noise when had it checked but they could not find a problem who checked it what makes u think injection pump Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC
stanman1
SHE HAS GONE QUIET!!!!! I cant believe it !reassembled engine and ran it up without timing cover refitted, resting on a trolley jack just to see if it had made any difference with a different piston and con rod in No 1 cylinder. started after a lot of cranking and bleeding at the injectors. she still had the noise, i was absolutley gutted!!! i had the hump so bad i just floored the throttle thinking if it blew the lump i didnt care and at least i would see what was causing the knock!! then i calmed down and just went in. the next day i thought i would finish the build and just drive it round with the knock, knowing full well it wasnt anything mechanical. when completed i started her up and the knock had gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its like magic! she is running sweet pulling well and every thing is working. all the fitters helping cant understand it and nor can i! I am just so pleased it is running. Just thought i would let you know. MattDRX
Sorry this is late, but if the piston was hitting the valves you'd of seen the marks and damage to them when stripping. Couldn't it of just been the injector rail rattling it's !Removed! off, quite common thing and sounds horrible.
