Hi I'm new to this site. I have a problem I think the bottom end bearing has gone, there is an extreamly loud knocking noise coming from the engine when the car runs idle and gets worse as it accelerates. I spoke very briefly to someone working at a garage and he said straight off that he would diagnose it as bottom end bearings. I was wondering how big and costly a job it would be to fix the problem. Any input would be extremely appreciated.

Probably quicker and cheaper to source another engine to be honest

Ditto by the time you've had the crank redone new shells all the work involved engine out gearbox off timeing belt off very labour intensive job like Stef suggest I'd source a new engine plenty of reputable dismantlers out there

As above really, it is a big job plus you won't know the extent of the actual problem till you get it apart. Worst case it may need a new crank if the bearing journals are heavily damaged and beyond any decent repair or regrinding.

Hi thanks for the replies, this isn't sounding very good... I'm not massively clued up with mechanical knowledge but I think this is fairly excessive damage to a car that's only 5 years old with 50,000 on the clock is this out of the norm or is it just one of those things?

Get a 2nd opinion on the noise first just to confirm it is bearing noise, dual mass flywheel can sound pretty terminal when they fail.
