2005 C-Max

Hi guys, I'm new here so please be gentle. I have a C-Max that seems to be picking and choosing what light it wants to show me on the dash.

Last week the oil light came on, so I checked the oil level, and had it looked at professionally and was told it was a faulty sensor. A do or so after that the Abs light came on and has been coming on since. There isn't any faults with the braking system at all. Recently I had a message appear on the dash saying 'Engine system failure' and the car seemingly going into limp mode. Until I switched it off and back on.

Now since that came up on screen. The engine management light has been illuminated. Again there's no problems performance wise. I've read some forums stating that the Ford C-Max are sometimes known to have a faulty dash, could this be the issue with my C-max as like previously said there's no performance issues, and no strange noises.

Thanks in advance for any help

Engine system failure is standard when another part of the car has a fault, did you change the sensor?

Do you have a code reader, this will help anyone willing to help out to narrow it down, as for the dash it's usually the mk1 focus that suffers from a faulty dash.

Check the fuse box by the footwell for any water, there was a modified part fitted to the fuse box due to water ingress.

You could try disconnecting the battery for about 30 mins ( make sure you have the radio code) this will reset the systems on the car.

Hi thank you for your response. When the display shows the error message I find that a simple switch off of the engine and a restart after a second of 2 rectifies it, which made me think it was just a fault in the dash?

My brother has a code reader, I keep meaning to get him to plug it in but haven't got round to it. I will get him to plug it in and see if it brings anything up. I will update here as soon as I have.

Switching off and on will usually clear it temporarily but will keep coming back, I had a faulty mass air flow sensor and did the same as you, in fact it didn't come on for days then it went in to limp mode pretty much all the time, got a code reader and cleared it but until I changed it it would always be there.

Code readers are cheap as chips I have a d900 of eBay £20. Always worth having one.

Yeh I have 1 or 2 that I'm watching on eBay, not got the spare cash at present tho, just a quick question tho, the ones I have been looking at which have the usb connection in 1 end, where abouts is the socket for the scanner in the car? I thought it would be in the central arm rest but I looked in there the other day but all I found was the master handbrake should the electronic one fail.

You need ones with obd socket, the socket is under the dash by the drivers right foot, just inside a little pocket.

Not sure about the ones with usb's.

Hi, Yeh sorry I think I caused a little confusion. Or may be not. The one I have been looking at has an obd socket on 1 end and usb on the other and software installed on a laptop. I will pick one up as soon as I can

Have you got a link?

Should be something like this.

Comparing the 2, the link you have provided looks more value for money than the type I was looking at.

I also have something similar, got a program on disc it has a lot more info but it's not all compatible. With the one I sent the link to its on hand straight away without getting the lap top out..

Within 3 minutes you can read and delete codes on the d900.

Thanks for your help and advice

I did a thread (check my signature for got an error on your car?) That will allow you to do diagnostics on your car. I highly recommend the FORSCAN software with the modified ELM cable.

Now, as for the errors, it could be a wiring fault that is causing the issue. The ABS error I had which was due to a faulty short loom. Ideally we need some error codes and detailed descriptions as to the errors to really assist.

Just plugged in the code reader of brothers and no codes were detected. Although my brother seems to think the only reason for the abs light is just down to dirty sensors and rusty brake disks

That is possible but depending on the code reader standards it may not be accessing more than one module

It was the same code reader as recommended by previous comments. I'm going to pop to a specialist to get a full readout.

I will update the post once I've had it checked.

No worries and unless it's a modified device it can't access the abs module as far as I recall. But any error with the abs which brings the light up should register a fault code.

Hi guys. Just an update, I've had the car plugged in to a more in depth code reader. There's 2 things causing the abs light to be on.

They say 1 is to do with the Speed sensor on the right front wheel. And there's a tooth missing on the rear wheel O ring ??

I expect the sensor would be easy to fix? But is the O ring more of a job for a professional?

with regards the speed sensor, I had this issue, and it was down to a faulty short loom! the problem is these things are pretty much welded in there by road cack. You have two options at this point!

1) swap the short looms over (passenger to driver and vice versa - see if the fault follows the lead)

2) swap that one with a Ford one (aftermarket will bring the light on permenantly).

alternatively let the garage do it! as for the o ring, you could strip the hub back and do it yourself

In terms of the wheel hub, is the o ring the garage refers to which teeth are missing related to the wheel bearing itself and in terms of buying the part what is the correct name. The garage just said it was an O ring with teeth.

I can't say for definite where it is, but I believe it's behind the disk (trying to remember ad I tried to remove my sensor ages ago!)

Forscan with EML config are they easy to use, I mean can I screw the car up on using one of these ? Lol

If you just reading data no, however if you start trying to change settings without sense on elmconfig then yeah. Put it this way, if I can do it, everyone could probably do it lol

The one you are selling does it come with disk? I have something like it on the lap top but doesn't do much to change things on it.
