St180 Main Beam Adjustment

How do you adjust the main beam height level

Soamer

If your wanting to do it because the beam is too high/low you will need a Phillips screw driver, masking tape, tape measure and a garage door/wall. You need to measure from the floor too the middle of the projector lens then on the garage door wall put a line of tape at this height. Now measure 25 metres from the wall and this is where the car needs to be. Now turn your lights on and see where they line with the tape (the beam will look like this \___ \___ ). The line at the bottom should be level with the tape line if it's not lift the bonnet and on the headlights you will see like a white plug that the screw driver should fit in. With this you can adjust it up and done as you need too.

If it's because you have a car full of people or boot full there is a dial near the around the front fog switch which you can use as a temporary level as and when you need it but this is only what it's for as they should be properly aligned before you use this.

The thing is you need the car to be on a flat and level surface, and good luck finding a level surface 25m long with a wall in front of it. I was going to try and adjust mine but going to take it into a garage and have it done properly (if not too expensive).

Hope you mean dipped beam and not main beam.

I assumed that's what he meant too.

Any mot centre will do it for a small fee, only takes 2 mins to do, ford normally do set up lights correctly from the factory.

In my experience they don't set them up as I would want them, they may be within the legal limits but they are angled too low on my current Fiesta and the last one too. It's so bad that you can't see far enough ahead at night.

Think you been unlucky then phil, normaly set to just under upper limit, ive checked 100's of them.

Maybe it is set to just under the upper limit, but I could tell the first time I drove my ST at night that the dipped beam is too low, and exactly the same as it was on my last Fiesta. It's so low that I usually don't feel comfortable doing more than 50 on unlit roads if there is nothing in front to show that the road is clear. Maybe it's this bad for most other drivers but if that's true then they obviously don't care if they're going to hit something.

Cant disagree about the lighting effect of the fiesta on the road think its poor headlight design. I critised the fiesta headlights when I had to use one at night, they are dismal, but checked the aim after and were set correctly, problem with setting them outside the limits are 1 dazzling on coming vehicles 2 first mot will fail on aim

my focus isnt much better and there set right on the upper limit.

Cheers guys

I think the headlights as standard are good better than my old car they are bright and the main beam dose light the road up really well, it's just the near side is higher than the offside by a good way over a ten meter distance the n/s is about 6 feet higher than the o/s over got the recommended upgrade bulbs and will change them when we have a bit warmer weather

If they're already at the upper limit that's ok, I wouldn't adjust them any higher than that but would be good to get them checked. And if they can't be improved by adjusting I might start thinking about HIDs.

I miss the factory fit hids that were on my previous car, they also swiveled round bends. Best dipped beam lights ive had.

Yeah hopefully Ford will see sense and offer HID or LED headlights on the next Fiesta.

I've always had the main/high beam set slightly higher than the dipped beam

  • 8 months later...

I took the car to a garage to have the dipped beam adjusted a few months ago, and have just noticed that they might have done it wrong. When I was following someone he said that my right headlight looked like it was brighter than the left, and would dazzle more when going over bumps. I can also see this in reflections in other cars - the right headlight sometimes looks brighter.

I think it could be because the diagonal cut-off for the right headlight is more in the centre, whereas for the left headlight it's over to the left to light up the side of the road (I assume). Got it booked into a dealer to have it checked again, thinking it may be too high. In the meantime can anyone shed any light on this? (accidental pun there haha)
