Brake Disc Replacement, Which Brand Name

Featured Replies

52 plate Focus Ghia 1.8 tdi 5 door hatch.

Going to be replacing fron brake pads when better weather comes in, not desperately needing them just now as it just passed mot. I want to replace the two front discs while I'm at it. Anyone had any issues ordering parts from Eurocarparts? I have a store a couple of miles away so I can buy over the counter ...I hope.

I see they have different brands ranging from £9.54 to £25.00, Pagid, Eicher or Bosch. I'm familiar with the Bosch brand name but never heard of the other two., which would be best?

I see the same brand names for pads with the addition of Textar, again varying prices between £11.00 & £40.00, the dearest being Bosch, is this paying for the brand name or are they better quality.

I don't mind what the rest of my car looks like but I'm very fussy about the braking performance of it. I'm a old codger so I don't race about like a boy racer :-)

As usual with mot's on older cars advisories about brake pipes, I'm considering swapping steel piping for copper piping, I've heard Kunifer copper/nickel will take longer to corrode than normal, is this true? My son will be doing this work for me, he has the tools for shaping/flaring brake pipes etc.

Thank

Pagid are a known brand, part of the same group of companies that includes Ferodo - they make high spec pads for stuff like Porsches etc but also do aftermarket discs etc for more general cars too.

I've always used replacement Ford discs which have been good price and obviously work fine.

As for the brake pipes I'd say just replace like for like, after all if the original pipes have lasted for 13 years then unless you plan on keeping the car for another 13 years I can't see the point of trying to make up a bespoke set in another material. Would be a fair amount of work to replicate the original brake pipe bundle imho.

Pagid discs/pads are my first choice unless someone specifies otherwise.

As for brake pipes, copper is easier to work with - but it does need to be supported properly or it can fracture through vibration. Cunifer pipe is much better for corrosion and less prone to fractures. It's a bit harder to work with but easier than steel pipe

I've used pagid discs on the front of my focus, and for some reason they both warped.they could have been faulty discs but they are good ..have eichers on at mo.

Pagid disks on Textar pads of textar is available is the best combination.

Textar are same company as pagid TMD friction but slightly better compound and quality, often have a cut down the centre to help remove brake dust also... Whereas pagid equivalent doesnt.

Steel brake pipes require different equipment to copper for forming due to it being tougher

Pagid for me as well as for euro had no issues 3/5times I've ordered stuff even when they got my order wrong 3 times I was left to keep the stuff and I got a refund I'm sure pagid is what ford use might be wrong there only other brand i use is mintex

Ford use ATE mostly

Thanks guys for the advice, Yes Troy if this car or myself :D can last another 13 years then I'll keep it, 78000 miles on the clock so I reckon engine will do just fine if I can keep bodywork ok ;) . I'd probably only replace pipes as they are needed with kunifer or similar. No point in doing it all in one go. Pagid seems the way to go and I notice ECP has a sale on just now, brake discs £20.00 each, I think I'll grab a pair just now and store them away until I'm ready.
