Fluid Leak

Featured Replies

2004 KAsport 1.6 34k miles.

I had the first chance today to get under the KAr since I bought it - there are a couple of advisories on the MOT that I want to fix.

The MOT shows an advisory for an "oil leak" so I had the car on ramps today to see where this was coming from. I found the leak coming from around a nut in the engine bay. It looks like it is screwed into the top of the engine.

I have taken some pictures and attached them below. I managed to tighten the nut up slightly as it wasn't fully tightened. I have cleaned around the area and will check after a week or so to see it it has gone.

The first picture is from under the car looking up into the engine (drivers side)

The second picture is looking down into the engine bay - drivers side and the nut is just below the first spark plug from the left.

The last picture is looking from the back of the engine and shows the first spark plug in the picture

Question is - what is this nut? What does it do? Is there a seal that could have gone? and also, is it oil or fluid (it looks and feels like oil)

not sure what the bolt is but i would give the whole engine a good degrease then after a day of driving have a look to see if any oil is leaking. it may have been where previous owners spilt oil when fillng the the engine

I dont know for sure but it could be the oil relief valve. I would gently unscrew it and change the o ring

Hi, this is tensioner for the chain drive. When taking mine out as I needed to do some tappet inspection I was shocked at how easy the big nut un screwed. my advise would be to make sure its tightened to the correct torque (40 nm) as you dont want this working its way lose. You'll need a 27mm socket.

Thanks guys

I had a look today after it had a weeks use last week and the area around the nut is dry. Looks like it was where the oil was coming from.

I need to get a torque wrench though as have tightened up with a spanner for the time being.
