Strong Petrol Smell ???

Featured Replies

HI TO ALL,

2011 Focus 1.6 Sport Petrol, when driving the car with the windows closed there is no smell at all, when windows are open there is a quite strong smell of petrol, has anyone had this before???

Does yours have a petrol cap? I know there was an issue on Vauxhall Astras (swear words!) where the cap was not sealing and letting vapours escape which was more noticeable with the window down. It was just a case of fitting a new cap to sort it.

Have a check that all your fuel lines, filter, injectors etc are not leaking too.

As Wes has already said, check everywhere for a fuel leak, it should be fairly obvious. Smell around the engine bay, and look for the tell-tale 'air dancing' where the fumes are escaping. Not sure where the leak is likely to be though. I would check the engine, injectors, and around the tank especially where the filler neck joins to the tank.

Hi, thanks for the comments, will have a look around tomorrow, as for the petrol cap, the car has a wierd sort of filler, you dont take a cap off to fill, you just push the nozzle into the centre of what would have been a cap, regards.

Hi again, nearly found the leak, there is petrol dripping down on the rear suspension, cant quite see exactly where as i cannot get far enough underneath to see, will have to jack the car up to find it, anyway thanks for your comments, appreciated.

Probably filler neck if it is on the same side

You haven't over filled the tank have you? as excess will come out there if you pump 2 clicks in the tank

Hi to all again,

Found the leak, it was the rubber breather pipe near the tank filter, it was off completely although the clip was still attached but not snapped too, have refitted the pipe and clip, the smell has now gone, job done!!! (maybe someone trying to syphon the fuel?)

Many thanks to all that replied.
