My Focus Is Dying 2003 1.6 Petrol Automatic

Featured Replies

hi to all i have a 1.6 focus petrol automatic zetec se .......i was driving home when i heard a rapid knocking sound from the engine that gets faster when accelerating and when slowing/stopping car idles irratic then stalls .......put 4 litres of 5w30 in.... now when trying to start dash and roof light go dim/off starter clicks once....tried jumping from another cars battery but leads got hot quick and i saw a tiny plume of smoke from middle of engine so....

is it wise to try and jump start again ?

any idea about irratic idle and stall ?

or what knocking noise is ?

car wont start helpppppp....

How much oil was already in it? Or did you do a full change?

Oops sorry wrong thread.......

Probably no oil or very litte oil already in but i put car in first gear and pushed it abit so may not be seized........ charging battery now

Big or small end gone? sounds pretty terminal. Was knocking high ping or low thump?

Did oil pressure light come on?

More like a cable tie in a fan got faster with revs oil light came on when i turned sharp

As the oil capacity of the engine is 4.25 litres that means it must have virtually run dry of oil which poses the question of how you came to let it get in that state? Unless you have a catastrophic oil leak or it's burning vast quantities you shouldn't have lost 4 litres in a normal service interval. How long since it was serviced? Have you ever checked the dipstick?

If it really needed that quantity of oil it's pretty well certain you've trashed the engine.

Top end probably gone then, minimum of rebore, new pistons, rings, con rods, crankshaft bearings etc, so probably game over

Best case, you dropped a valve due to no hydraulic lift, ticking is piston hitting what's left of valve, Rebore, piston and rings all round

Engines do not tolerate a lack of oil

Recon engine would be cheaper me thinks

Its why I have added oil pressure, and temp senders. The Mk 3 also has an oil level warning sensor and you can have almost no oil in the system but the pressure is still good so the light stays off

How can i check topend ?

Seems like maybe an electrical fault ?

Fuel pump heard but no action from starter

Like something is stopping current maybe

Or the engine is seized

But i can push it in first gear would i be able to do that if it was seized ?

Possibly depending on how badly seized.. Have you tried turning it over alot with the starter working & then it's stopped working?

Possibly, Its a low gear and you get a good mechanical advantage

When the battery is charged, try to start it. Does it turn over and not start? or does it not turn over at all?

Wont turn over when key is turned starter moves about 20mm once thats all it does

Engine seized then. Too much friction for starter to turn,

Looks like game over I'm afraid
