How Is This Thing On The Front Window Called?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm doing some planning for a little retro-fitting and I need to know how can you call this thing on the front window, around the top of the window and around the rain sensor...

post-58295-0-40797300-1436273999_thumb.j

Since my front window is in top shape, I'm not very in the mood of changing it to the one with sensor built in, so I'd like to use some sort of wrap, or tint or something like that, to fake the original look of the window with sensor...

I found black tint on eBay, which I can use for the center black part of the sensor, but the perforated part seems to be "unsearchable" for me (not being a native english speaker and all)...shops here which install window tints looked at me like I'm crazy when I wanted something like this from them, so I think I'm left with eBay...

Can you give me a hint on what I can look for?

Thanks ;)

On the original windscreen the black surfaces are coated with a black glass coating.

Note that the mirror mounting of windscreens with or without light/rain sensor are different. If you want to retrofit the original light/rain sensor and autodimming mirror you have to change the mirror mount also. Personally I would glue the new mirror mount to the windscreen first and paint the surrounding surface afterwards using a black glass paint.

The perforated part on top will be a bit more difficult. I have never seen this for sale. The easiest solution will be designing and cutting by a local wrapping specialist.

I know that originally it's not made out of wrap, or tint, but as I said, I don't want to change the windscreen just for this (for one thing I have heated windscreen, which is more expensive and for another, I would want to get the IR windscreen already, which would also add some € to the final price tag...so, no :D ).

As for the mirror mount, you can easily bypass this by using rearview mirror (or the plastic part of the mount at least) from MK6.5 Fiesta, which has the same mount as Focus (without the sensor), but the cover for the sensor can be installed on the windscreen around the mount too. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it very well, so picture worth a thousand words:

And I believe, that I can switch the mirror mounts on the mirrors from one to another, from manual to autodimming, so the mount part on the windscreen can stay the same.

But, that's getting ahead of myself, so far all I would like to do, is to install this mirror from Fiesta (with the same mount as the Focus) with cover for the sensor and put my aftermarket rain/light sensor in it, which basically does the same job as the original would do, though it needs to have a separate controller box...

And, since I like things to look like OEM, I would like to create an illusion of the original windscreen tint, like it's on the window when there's the factory mounted sensor...

I already have black tint at home and something like this is on the way:

but, I'd like to know if the perforated tint doesn't have a more common name, so I could find some tint that has a little better OEM feel...

Oh and btw, you can also use a mirror from a pre-FL Mondeo Mk3, which has the same mount as Focus and it's even autodimming mirror, though the wire to the mirror isn't covered that much nicely in the mount as it is with newer cars...
