been told i 'might' need a software update to cure a problem that ive had for a while.

called ford and they want 91.00 +vat just to run a diagnostic machine and will charge me that amount even if i dont need an update. disgusting. most places apart from main dealers dont charge to 'look'.

anyway, 1. is there a way of checking if my car needs an update and 2. where can i get one if it does, other than going to money-grabbing ford?

    You can check if your car is outstanding any software updates by using Ford Etis and entering your vin number. Just google ford Etis and it will bring up the site

    Ah sorry about that mate, did you try doing it by vin number as well as sometimes it can be a bit more conclusive if done this way

    The software information on the Ford Etis website is not available for older vehicles.

    The software version can only be determined by diagnostics. Even if you do know the current software version it is very difficult to determine if there are any updates available.

    Most Ford software files can be downloaded from the Motorcraft website. To do this you need to know the exact file name of the software. To update the firmware a Ford specific diagnostic system with software/firmware programming capabilities (like for example the Ford IDS system) is necessary. Generic diagnostic system (often used by independend garages) do usually not have these capabilities.
