Mk5 Pas Pump Removal

Featured Replies

Hey guys, first question on the forums so fingers crossed!

I've got a 51 plate 1.25 Zetec fiesta ghia and I need to remove the power steering pump.

According to the manual I have I can get easier access by removing the auxillary drivebelt, however I can't seem to work out what to do, I don't know wether I have an automatic tensioner or not and if not I'm not sure where the mounting bolts are on my alternator?

Any help is appreciated and pictures can be provided.

Many thanks

Bump. Any nocturnal mechs got some advice?

i will have a look at autodata in a minute and see what the tensioner setup is.

Believe it or not autodata is not displaying any information on the aux belt for your car! I will check my book when I get in unless you have got it done or someone has replied with the info.

Thanks Stef, not sure why the car doesn't show up? I have an idea on removing the alternator but am still clueless on the whole process. Cheers for your help!

I have no idea either, that was the online version of autodata too.

Looking at the book there could be a few setups, any chance you could try and get a picture of what you have?

you say its 51 plate, thats the last of the 1996-2002 fiesta? if it is then its a pain to remove power steering pump from what i remember, you cant just unbolt pump off, you will need correct puller and remove power steering pulley before getting pump out, then fitting pump again the reverse is the case.

the aux belt has auto tensioner ,

whats up with the pump thats on now?

I will take pictures of the belt system whilst with the car at work tomorrow

Yeah it's one of the latest for that model, and looks a pain to get to it. My problem is I'm not sure which is my automatic tensioner if it's the model with one fitted, I can get pictures tomorrow.

The previous owner has told me the pump is faulty, I've got an oil leak on the drivers side near the PAS system and also hydraulic oil which is strangely under the passenger side of the engine bay? My steering is also heavy with a really bad groaning sound as the wheel is turned.

My plan was to remove the pump and check it out along with the pipes

The tensioner is the pulley on the left as you look at pulleys, unless you got correct puller and installer , I wouldnt entertain doing it yourself.

Best I could manage having to get around the wing if this helps.

Any chance you know where I can get the right tools?

sorry, dont know where to get tool from, as for the tensioner its the one on the left , you turn tensioner centre bolt clockwise to release tension while you take belt off, but thinking about your tensioner, a, have you got air con, b, how many pulleys does belt go round.

whay i ask, is that i think some of the last fiestas went over to the stretchy belt system that didnt have a tensioner and relyed on an elasticated stretchy belt to keep tension.you could have that type.so count the pulleys.

I have 7 pulleys and it does have an air con system, I've attempted a poor sketch of the belt if that'll help identify anything? All I know is the top right wheel is the alternator?

As for the tool I'll probably contact the Ford garage near my work, but thanks for the info :)

*UPDATE*

Hi all,

Recent progress, got the drivebelt off, credit to Iantt for info on the auto tensioner!

Now I'm a bit stuck removing the pulley for the power steering pump, apparently a specific puller is needed but after a lot of searching I'm still coming up blank, does anybody have any knowledge of possibly a ford specialist tool regarding the job?

Cheers,

Zac.
