Misfiring And Badly Smoking....

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I hope someone may be able to help me here with my daughters StreetKa.

Shes only had it for 3 or 4 weeks and its developed a bad problem.

Whilst she was driving it recently, it lost power, started to misfire badly and the smoke coming out of the exhaust was incredible to say the least!

I'm kinda suspecting the head gasket has gone but i'm trying to do a compression test before deciding what to do next. I don't know why but i can't actually get the compression tester to screw into any of the plug holes. Its the correct size and the plugs screw in fine, but i can't get the flippin compression tester to screw in at all. Any suggestions?

There's no water in the oil by looking at the dipstick, oil filler cap or expansion tank.

Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

Many thanks in advance.

Roger

Hi Roger,

Check the spark plugs themselves for signs of white or oil

Try changing fuel filter aswell

Also check for fault codes using a Bluetooth ELM327 and app from Play Store via android phone.

sounds like electrical. plugs leads coil pack

Apologies to those kind enough to reply to my post. No broadband for a while.....kids thought it was the end of the world!!

So, being little Miss Independent, she bought it out of the free ads, no receipt etc etc. She'll never learn, or maybe she will now. It now turns out she had a 'friend' look at it and so has replaced the following items with good quality versions.

So, its had new

Plugs

coil pack

leads

fuel injectors

and apparently as strawberry air freshener.

I managed to borrow a different compression tester today and have the following results

No1 - 150 psi

No2 - 170 psi

No3 - 175 psi

No4 - 180 psi

Is 20% variance from lowest to highest too much?

Not done a wet test but was thinking of doing tomorrow.

Also did a sniff test and it showed no evidence of co2 (if that's what it sniffs for).

I also noticed that no1 spark plug was visibly wet with fuel, where the others where dry

I also discovered that it had been massively overfilled with oil. I reckon i removed 500mls+

Head gasket ............??

Thanks guys.

Rog

firstly i would get a good set of plugs then drain the oil out & fill it up to the proper levels and check all other top ups then

give the car a really good run on a dual carrage way or mway as it may need it if it's only been town driven.

it does sound like it's burning too much oil

once you given it a hard drive then do another compression test and check the plugs

the compression should be pretty much the same on each cyl

Thanks Delboy. I think i might do a plug test first just to see if no1 is sparking ok, but i guess they could be ruined by now even tho only being installed 50 miles ago.

I did another 'dry' then a 'wet' comp test and both showed 14 bar across the board for dry and wet. So all good there i guess.

Fuel was actually spraying out of the plug hole when doing the comp testing, not just a little either!!

I can't really drive it due to the amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust. I smells more of unburnt fuel than anything (black/grey), but its so much, its like someones chucked a feckin smoke grenade!!

Thanks again all..........
