Swooshy Sound Only When Driving And In Gear

Hi guys i'm going on a long journey tomorrow so wanted to check this out. When the car is engaged in gear there is a noticeable high frequency bearing type swishy sound which is noticeable when passing parked cars with windows down and speeds up when speed increases. It sounds a bit like when brakes are about to fail and you get that metal on metal sound. The sound disappears completely if I come out of gear or press the clutch down.

Any idea what the problem might be, and how safe it is to carry on driving with the issue?

    How can I tell whether its clutch or gearbox bearings? Are they both an expensive fix?

    it maybe the driveshaft bearings. thats a more simple job to do.
