Hi guys, new to the forum and after some advice,

i have recently bought a cheap fiesta to commute to work etc i have noticed that it is starting to loose coolant and seems that the expansion bottle is pressurising (starting to hiss and bubbling slightly out from the cap.) just replaced the cap and still doing it.

i have also noticed that once the engine is up to temperature i have an odd squeal/ whine every few seconds (maybe 5) it sounds like it coming from the cam belt area. so i'm wondering if both the coolant loss and noise are connected?

in the last week i have done an oil change and found no traces of water in the oil nor have i found gunk in the oil filler cap and no smoke from the engine so i don't think its the head gasket,

the temp gauge in the car has always read normal which is a little confusing as its loosing coolant.

wondering if anyone has any ideas on what the problem is or anyway of checking/ finding the fault?

It's possible that the water pump needs replacing & is leaking. If the bearings are going, the pulley will wobble and cause the belt to squeel

What's the mileage of the car?

Usually the waterpump is replaced at the sametime as the cambelt and tensioner

So if the water pump is failing, id be looking at having the cambelt replaced too. It's an interference engine after all..

Hello buddy, i was thinking the same and wondering if it was the water pump that's had it, although the temp gauge is reading normal which when i had a mk5 fiesta and water pump had gone the gauge was going up and down.

the cars done 91k but had an engine change with the 2nd hand engine having done 86k and was told by the seller that the cam belt was done when fitting the engine back in but have no proof or receipts for this being done so i don't know if the water pump was done at the same as the belt.

Pumps fail in different ways from car to car. It's possible the pump in the mk5 was stopping & starting causing fluctuating temperatures. This water pump may just be rattling around and allowing coolant to leak out

right i see, so i take it that if its the water pump at fault and leaking i should be able to see it leaking from underneath the car?

I would also check that the coolant tank is not leaking as they are prone to leak due to to crack or so. Ss i had to change on lads mk6

My first one cracked as well. Thinking about it. It looks like a stretch Mark on skin, but it's actually a very fine split in the tank

I did have a look at the coolant tank and couldn't see a crack on it but kinda hard to have a proper look at it being where it is. Not sure if a cracked coolant bottle would also explain the whine noise coming from the cambelt area?

It wouldn't explain the whining, I reckon water pump. But the expansion bottle is a very common issue, along with a few other mk6 problems
