Stupid Question About Power Assisted Steering.

Featured Replies

Why is it that I could steer my old chaps 77 Golf (and a 59 A35 van) with one finger without power steering much easier than my Fiesta WITH power steering? Is the geometry different etc?

LOL, Random question. . . I think the power steering in the fiesta is designed to work at low speeds, ie pulling out of junctions and stuff. . . it's supposed to have a weighty feel to it, and you don't really need it much when travelling 30mph and above

I love the steering, it's like a go-cart, it just seems odd that I could spin the Golf lock to lock when stationary with one finger. Admittedly the wheel was a tad (quite a bit) larger.

You're not supposed to be able to control the steering wheel with one finger. ;)

If you can do so, you either have one really strong finger or more likely there's something wrong with that car/steering.

The Golf steering was remarkable, roadholding was a different matter ;)

And the brakes, nope, it didn't have any :D

If you didn't look/plan 100 yards ahead you were f*****.

The older powered steering systems were just that, a hydraulic pump that moved the rack for you. The newer & Fiesta systems are electrically assisted and tuned to give you some feedback as to what the wheels are doing.
