Fiesta Over Revving While Changing Gears

Featured Replies

Hi all my ford feels like it's over revving while changing down gears to slow and it sounds like it's over revving as well you can feel the vibrations in the gear stick as well any suggestions to what it could be ? Thank you in advance

It's normal for the rev counter to go up when you change down. If its going further than it should though, clutch issues perhaps?

I'm assuming your not going from 5th to 2nd whilst travelling at 60mph right....?

Ianb it happens at various speeds but it did happen while at 50mph slowing to 25 changed to 2nd

To be honest, I can't really picture what sorts of speeds I change down at, on some roads when I'm heading to my parents the car gets thrown around quite a lot as it doesn't really get solid runs at the moment... but if for instance you're in 4th and doing something like 50 and your revs are at say 2200, you can expect them to go up to perhaps 4000 if you change down to second..(made the numbers up)...you might get a judder at the same time especially if you release the clutch instantly..

I'd be concerned about it if you change down 1 step and it acts the same... maybe a video (someone else filming the rev counter etc) might make it easier to diagnose...

I assume your Fiesta actually has a rev counter although some older cars don't, but if it does you can see if it's revving too high. As long as the rev counter doesn't show anything into the red area (probably around 6000 if it's a petrol) then you're ok. But changing into 2nd at 25mph seems a bit unnecessary, you should be in 3rd or 4th at that speed unless you need to overtake something quickly.

Also when the engine is cold you should keep the revs quite low and take it easy until the engine and oil have had a few minutes to warm up.
