Starting Problems -- Help!

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Looking for advice / help - At my Witts end

Since around Sept, my Ford Focus Zetec - 1.6 tdci which is a 13 plate has been having problems starting.

Issue is intermittent, some days worse than others. When trying to start the car, nothing happens. Ignition is coming on and then nothing. The engine wont crank. Originally suspected the fault was the battery which was replaced at my expense! Hasn't really resolved the issue. It was fine for about a week then as bad as ever.

When it does this, I can usually persevere and it will eventually start. This can be constant trying for upto 15 minutes. I had to be recovered by the AA last night who gave me a bump start to get it going.

Car went to the dealer today who had it all day and couldn't replicate the fault. No error codes and everything checks out ok. Took it for a test drive with Start Stop enabled and it was fine. I rolled out the garage and got to the first set of lights - start stop kicked in and nada! Wouldn't start. Went back in and mechanic came out and it started no bother.

Cant find any pattern - Outside temperature, length of time the car has been sitting etc.

Found these on Youtube which is the very same issue - with the exception my car is a manual with no TCM as far as I am aware.

Can anyone offer and advice / help?

Thanks in advance!

David

Could try the multiplug in the fuse box (engine bay), take it off spray it and push it on on and off a few times. When I had problems with starting (although it cranked) I undid the plug and didn't put it back exactly right I then got the no crank that you are experiencing. Long shot but free to try. :( Only other thing I can think of is bad earth use, negative jump lead from battery to something metal under the bonnet.

Thanks for the reply. The ford garage have checked all of the above with the exception (to my knowledge) of the multiplug. I'll give that a go when its dry. Thanks!
