Ka 2003 1.3 Duratec. Which alternator?

Featured Replies

Hi

I hope someone can tell me what alternator is fitted to a standard Ka 1.3 Duratec, 2003 Reg.  It has power steering but no aircon.

It appears a few variants of Valeo or Bosch alternators are listed for this model.

Something is squeaking and there is also a rewally loud 'whine' from that area of engine, plus red charging light been on for weeks but battery seems to stay charged.

A friend has listened to the noise and said it is likely to be the alternator or a belt tensioner that is on its last legs (done 91,000 miles) so I'm happy to replace both bits but I can't see either part to know what to buy before I do the job.

Second hand alternators are only about £30 so I'll risk buying one in advance ready to go in.

I need the car every day so I can't afford luxury (or risk) of stripping it down to see what parts are needed ... then trying to buy them same day, just in case I can't get them and have to have car off road for a day or two.

I'm also told its a pig of a job to do .... anyone done this and has any tips?

Any help appreciated.

phoe fordparts with your vin number and they maybe able to help you. you can always use the chassis number when you phone fords as that maygive more details or look on the alt as they put details on there or atleast take a piccy of it for reference

It will hopefully just be a slipping aux belt.

Do you not have a multimeter - If not I would get one of those fancy alternator/charge testers from Halfrauds or ebay and check the alternator output first.

That way you will know if its snafu~

If not the aux belt and the alternator bearing is gone which is a common one on the KA its a REAL pig-sticker of a job!
Even I the great and powerful Omendata would not be looking forward to that job lol >;o)

1. Dis-connect the battery

2. Remove the front bumper

3. Remove the driver's head light casing

4. Remove the auxiliary belt

5. Undo the bolts holding the power steering pump

6. Disconnect the wires that lead to the alternator

7. Undo the bolts holding the alternator (I think there is 3). It should now be loose and you should be able to wobble it around.

8. Using a trolley jack, go underneath the front of the car and gently raise it to support the engine

9. Remove the bolts holding the engine

10. Jack the engine up about 8 inches

11. Now with a bit of twisting and turning, the alternator should come out. Even at this stage it took around 15 minutes to rotate and fiddle with it in different ways in order to get it out.
