Madge
I often cannot, release the key quickly enough when starting the car so I get the grinding noise of the starter still engaged. This is a new development and my partner has the same problem (not my slow reactions). In the past I could release the key as soon as I was aware the engine had fired but now I have to give a quick flick of the key and even then I sometimes get the grinding as the engine fires. Can anyone explain what could cause this please?
Mariner
Sounds like either the helix gear on the starter motor is sticking / damaged - or worse case the flywheel gear teeth are damaged. I think it will need the starter motor removing for a proper diagnosis.
TomsFocus
Makes a change to all the slow starting threads on here lol! Most likely the starter getting stuck as above though.
Madge
Thanks guys - that makes sense. An easier and cheaper fix than a lot of reluctant starting problems!!! (unless its the flywheel ring gear)
