the car is looking dull and and my car took up smoking

Featured Replies

Well hey again guys I have just finished painting my new wing I purchased to replace one that was dented and creased so badly I couldn't even open the door :) now its on the car ( i used colour match paint) and it looks like a bazillion miles off of what the actual colour is. Its also dull and gloomy car is glossed up. Now I have used primer, base coat (moondust silver for code 62) and a clear lacquer over the top.

How can I buff this up by hand and what equipment would I need. I can't afford a buffer at the moment which I wish I could so it will be done by hand. I will have the time

Also today I changed the air filter in my MK6. It was that black it could not have ever been changed, same as the cabin filter. Blatantly the owner before could not care less about it. After I changed it i turned the key and revved it up slightly. Got a lovely induction noise from a panel which was nice however I slipped and pushed the pedal down too far and it revved and white smoke came from the front end near the belt and the belt squealed so loudly it hurt my ears. I quickly turned the engine off and the smoke just went away. I see a tiny bit of oil or some liquid on the floor but nothing to a massive extent and the oil itself was at the back right area (No dripping at all) I have not restarted the engine as afraid I might break it :)

I checked the coolant its got a kind of horrible scum look effect on top dunno if it was ever changed but it is below the min mark. Has been for a while now.

I also checked the oil and it seems there is none in it at all (so the dipstick says) car says nothing no warning light or anything. How is it possible for the car to have no oil yet still somehow not show the warning light on the dashboard or at least the check engine light :)

The smoke was a white colour. Had no blue in it that I could tell and left no smell in the air or cabin for that matter

If anyone could answer these questions I would be grateful

Cheers Guys

Ryan

As you mention belt squeal I'd say it was the belt burning as it span.

Thank you for your help. If the belt is to blame here what is my best option. Lossen it or replace it. Also how would it explain the small drips of a clearish liquid on the floor at the back right of the engine. Again the dipstick is still showing the car is oilless after a day of letting the engine cool and settle

Cheers

For the paint you just need something to 'cut' the top layer of lacquer smooth, some sort of cutting compound and will require elbow grease without an electric polisher.

Belt squeal is common as they use stretch belts rather than ones with a tensioner - so there's nothing to put more tension on them as they stretch further over time.  Smoke could've been from anywhere, only way you'll know is to run it again tbh and have a good look around, aux belt squeal won't damage anything other than the belt.  It's possible that one of the pulleys have seized and the belt is spinning on it, or might just be drips of something on the exhaust that was burning off.  If it was rubber belt smoke though, I'm pretty sure you'd smell that as it's horrible lol.

Not sure about the oil level, I would top it up before running again though lol.  The oil light only shows lack of pressure, not low level, so you have got 'enough' in there to make pressure at least.

How wow. Must have skipped past the no oil bit. Top it up and keep an eye on it

Clear liquid could be many things. Have a good look.

Tbh tho this is sounding more and more like you need to get it to someone that knows what there doing

The horrible scum on the coolant could be bad news.   It could be the result of the head gasket leaking.

Cheers for the replies guys. I purchased some Mobil Sueper 3000 X1 Formula FE 5W 30 5ltr with the latest ford 913C economy stuff in it, and a new oil filter. Will be doing a complete change tomorrow just to release any of the old left over drips of oil it may have in the sump XD

Anyway as for the coolant I understand that I need to change this too. The poor little thing looks like it never got the TLC it needs. What would be the best, I want to drain it tomorrow so will pop to the local GSF or Halfords what do i need to fill the coolant???? I know anti freeze but just that or do i add water?

Also I started the car and no smoke is coming from the exhaust and after many hours of phone calls to Ford and garages they all say white smoke from exhaust means imminent Head Gasket fail. However they cant explain the smoke and the squeal with no smell. I had a mechanic with me at the time it happened and he recalls the squeal being really high pitch and the smoke came from the exact area of the belt? Yet he is certain as am i that there was definitely no smell to it.

As a run down we removed the filter box (pain that was XD ) and removed the two air hoses connected to it. We can recall the little pipe attached to the filter box coming detached without us knowing and was laid on the engine for about 25 to 30 seconds.

When we removed the filter box and took it apart there was a sponge in there with the filter. This sponge had oil on. This confused me as he asked if that needed replacing as he never seen it before. I said tbh i never knew it was there I just ordered the filter through a reg check on GSF site. No sponge came up. After vigorous googling I came to no avail or conclusion.

I must say though the sponge is filthy and has oil on it? To me I feel like I should be replacing it and cant help but feel that somehow its letting oil pass out somewhere as oil is definitely coating it. There is in fact some oil in the case under said sponge?

Sorry I am asking so many questions just got me wondering :/

I hope this helps and what is that sponge XD

Cheers Guys

So I have had the car looked at by a mechanic and they were utterly confused as to what it is also. They could not find any such issue with the vehicle. Its nothing they have ever witnessed before. Not a squeal and smoke together with not a single smell of burning rubber, oil or coolant. They have said that the scum in the coolant tank could be just horrible stuff from in the radiator like rust and sludge. I was recommended I purchase a new coolant tank which I have done cost me 8 quid and came with all new piping to the radiator. I have picked up some 50/50 coolant and antifreeze to mix with distilled water (50% of each).

I have to do the oil change and from what the inspection said is for a head gasket I would be looking for a chocolate milkshake colour oil. After a quick sample he took there was no milkshake colour too it. So he said change the oil and filter see what happens.

The squeal he reckons is either the belt is worn, a pulley is static (as someone above stated) or a bearing in one of the pulleys is failing/failed or the belt tensioner is broken and the belt is not at the correct tightness. He recommends I change it and all I could find is one from continental (yep the tyre company) which cost me 46 quid cause I got power steering, air con, alternator etc pulleys to cover. When we get chance we will be looking over the pulleys see if any are not able to turn or have a rattling sound down to bearings. This is the most likely he thinks cause of no oil and he thinks the car used up the most part of the oil then and after that none was sent to a pulley and it has ceased up.

I have purchased a new head gasket. I popped into the local ford dealer and they supplied me one for £16 and I purchased new head bolts for £20 just in case push comes to shove and it does turn out to be the worst.

So pay day on Friday is gonna be a long trip to my local auto shop after work to pick up my new belt, oil sump plug, spark plugs (because they need doing anyway), coolant tank with pipes and some other bits and bobs. Hell this car is costing me some money XD thank god i live with parents still.

Cheers for all your help guys. I am going to create a new topic for just this issue and will post pictures etc daily to keep you all in the know of what goes on and what to expect if any unlucky owner experiences what I am now :)

Cheers

Ryan

Probably the most accurate test for leaking HG is combustion products in the coolant. A garage can test for this (just a 5 minute job), they may do it free if they think they might get the job. Emulsion (grey gunge) in the crankcase & cam cover breather pipes is another fairly clear sign. Worth being sure it is faulty HG before all the work of a change!

Smell of antifreeze from the exhaust is another clue, assuming your current coolant has any or much antifreeze in it, it could be anything by the sound of it! A dodgy garage I once bought a car from drained my coolant into a scummy oily pan, changed the rad under warranty (I would not have been there otherwise). Then they poured the now very dirty coolant back into the radiator. Animals:ohmy:
