Keys!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Having a bit of trouble that I'm trying to resolve asap.

Basically I need a key cut for a mk6, it's just one of those crap old keys that looks about as secure as a teaspoon handle.

Thought I had the key code but it's the locking wheel nut key code lol.

I have disassembled the old lock barrel though, and each of 'plates' in there has a number on it.  Will that be the key code?  If so it top to bottom or vice versa?

Cheers

Tom

Is it the kind that is round with flats cut into it?

If so it's a Tibbe kind and can be read by looking at it.

Send me a highest quality possible picture of it via P/M (top and side of key) and I should be able to read it for you.

Yeah that's the type, I don't have the key though!  It snapped with the previous owner so they just changed the ignition barrel and swapped the new blade into the old fob, so I can't open the boot atm.  I found the old barrel in a door pocket though, with plates numbered between 1 and 4, thickness I guess, but if the codes are just between 1 and 4 that must be it right?

Without the key to copy, or the key code card I can't think of another way to get one.  They can't do it from the vin either apparently.

The cuts do indeed go from 1 to 4.

An Auto locksmith can read the lock using a tool that mimicks a key.

It goes in the lock and each lever is manipulated until the lock turns then the Locksmith reads the numbers off the tool.

If you have the old lock then there should be 6 numbers between 1 and 4.

Start at the end that is outermost then work in deeper.

Excellent, that's just what I was after, thanks Clive!

Welcome anytime.

So if you have the old barrel then you should be able to reassemble the new lock using the old rings and then get a key cut to match that so then all your locks will match again.

Do the door lock barrels match the new key too or the old one?

The door locks are original and I still have a working central locking/immobiliser fob.  The only parts that were changed were the ignition barrel and blade.

I was just going to get a plain key cut purely to open doors if the cl fails or battery dies, and of course to open the boot as the popper doesn't currently work.  Now I've got the original ignition barrel though, I guess I could refit that, have a new original blade cut to fit that and the original locks, and refit the original ignition barrel?

If the original barrel still functions then yes, refit it once you have a key to match.

Get a new key and fob done then swap the original immobiliser transponder to the new fob and recode the fob to the central locking.

Can I code the immobiliser with Forscan?

Trying to get it done as cheap as possible.  So thinking about getting a non-RCL fob with blade cut at Ford (about £30 I think?).  Allowing me to open the boot for now.  Then get that blade copied by a cheaper key cutter for an RCL fob to swap onto my current RCL/immob fob and swap the ignition barrel when I get the chance.  So would then have all original barrels, one RCL fob with immob and a spare non-RCL fob with immob fairly cheaply.

If your car has OBDII then Forscan should work.

So quick update, got a new plain key cut at Ford this morning using the code from the barrel.  No buttons or immob chip, just to do boot and doors for now.  £7.97 cut then and there.  Can't fault that tbh.

Clive, I think you know a tad too much about this

I did a Methods of Entry (lock picking to the layman) course many moons ago when I was with Armed Response.

It's amazing what they teach you.

Even now with the right set of tools and patience I could probably open most domestic locks.

I'll remember that next time I forget my keys after a night on the booze. Will save having to wake my missus up.

See my parts for sale on thread "philf1s Spirit Blue Fiesta ST180 parts for sale"

Well if you watch the films they've got two picks and after a wiggle they're in :whistling:

Just be glad it's not as easy in real life.
