What type of pinion does the steering wheel slide on to?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I hope your all doing grand today. :)

I would like to what type of pinion the steering wheel of my 2006 Fiesta slides on to?

Does it have splines, is it hexagonal or another type of pinion?

The reason I ask is because after my cars tracking (toe) was checked at my local garage they did not centre the steering wheel properly and it's a few degrees off centre. When the car is travelling in a straight line the steering wheel is turned slightly to the left. I dont want to take it back as it took 3 times for them to get the tracking set perfectly. I'd sooner just take the wheel off and adjust it that way. If it's hex I wont be able to make the small adjustment that it needs. It will just put it too far in one direction or the other.

So if the wheel slides on to splines I could just take it off and place it back on straight.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew. :)

Hex

Oh damn! :(  Thanks.

100% sure? :)

Yeah it's hex, I've no idea why Ford make it so awkward.

Yes.. It would be so much easier if it were splines. Thanks again.

Did you get it sorted? (Once had similar experience from one of those 'quick fit ting' places who wanted to strip down my stearing to fix it!!! The lazy so and so's only adjusted one rod end rather than adjust both!)

Hi Russ. Thanks for your post.

No it's not sorted yet. I't not been causing too much inconvenience. Just not perfect like I like it to be.. However the garage will redo the tracking for me. I've said to them just to do it when they can fit me in. Hopefully next week it will be done. :)

Just had my focus wheels tracked and the steering wheel was about 10 degree off. Drove for a week with it but my OCD was causing me grief about it. I took it back & they fixed it. After trying to redo it myself I'm 100% sure that even this garage adjusted only one side instead of adjusting both sides. (I couldn't 'crack' the Driver side track rod locking nut and it looked like it's never been moved since the car was new)

I know what you mean about 'only one side' and I know that some garages will only adjust one side. I know the guys at my garage do use both sides if its needed. I know them all well from my days in the motor trade and next time I going to set the steering wheel central then they can do the nessesary adjustments. I still get the feeling that its going to be slightly off centre to the left after they do the adjustments. If it does end up off centre again I'm going to hold the wheel the same amount of degrees it was out on the left, but to the right. That way if the wheel does spring back to the left after its tracked it will hopefully spring back to the centre. If you understand what I mean. :D

There must be something twisted in the steering mechanism somewhere. Car does not look like its been in a smash or anything like that but maybe its a steering arm, tie rod or other steering suspension part thats been bent when a wheel hit the kerb from bad driver parking :D
