Now garage woes - was ticking/knocking noise when idling

Featured Replies

An update on the below thread. The garage where I brought the Fiesta had it for a week, suspecting a possible timing chain issue but this was not the case. Cue several phone calls later, and I finally got told it was ready to collect today. During the week, I was told over the phone that they were going to try an flush of the engine to see if this rectified the issue.

Anyway, went to the garage to collect it and was told that they had performed a flush of the engine and also an oil change. Now the last service was completed in March 2016, but they decided to do that anyway. The car itself had a 3 month warranty, but I was told that the oil change and flush was not included in this. They then decided to inform me that it would be costing me £135.31 for the work they've performed.

Needless to say, I kicked up a fuss as I was never told that they were performing an oil change, nor of any possible costs by the work. Initially refusing to pay, but I needed my car back so have paid £100. The garage itself is a 'reputable' dealer (Ridgeway Select in Wantage).

So to cut a long story short, they have performed a whole new service (and provided a stamp for the year), but where do I stand as I never 'agreed' to the work being completed? I'm thinking of contacting the CAB or 'motor codes' to see what they advise?

I'm thinking I may have messed up by agreeing to pay any of the balance?

Cheers for your help!

Hi guys,

Had a look around but can't seem to an exact answer (A man's look!).

Had my 2013 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost for a month or so, but just noticed a ticking/knocking noise when it is idling. It does not appear to happen all the time, but usually noticeable after a short drive? The consensus seems it's normal for the model, but just wanted some reassurance? I've attached a video that best recreates it, as mine has decided it doesn't want to make the noise now!

Cheers again for your help.

New update:(. See above.

Sounds like they don't know what they are doing, an engine flush won't cure worn or damaged parts.

Pay for the oil & filter but no more.

I'd be really annoyed if mine made that noise.   When it's ticking over you can stand next to it and you can only just hear it.

Performing an engine flush on a 1.0 ECOboost is a very bad idea.

The 1.0 ECOboost has a wetbelt. This is basically a timing belt which is designed to be mounted inside the engine like a timing chain and is lubricated by the engine oil. Performing an engine flush on an engine with a wetbelt can damage the wetbelt. The engine flush additive contains ingredients to soften and dissolve dirt and contamination inside the engine block. On an engine with a wetbelt the addititve can also affect the material of the wetbelt. This can cause the wetbelt to break prematurely.

Interesting points.

They said that the chain/belt was fine, and that they couldn't find any fault hence they started with the flush and oil change.

I'm waiting for them to forward a copy of the work that they've completed, so will keep the point about the wetbelt in mind. JW, would you recommend another garage having a look at it based on that?

Cheers for your help, lovely car but having nothing but issues with it so far! :(

I am very curious how they inspected the wetbelt. The wetbelt is installed inside the engine. Many parts needs to be removed to have access to the wetbelt. Changing the wetbelt is basically an 8 to 10 Hour job. If I remember correctly Ford even prescribes to remove the engine to change the wetbelt on a Fiesta 1.0 ECOboost.

Well they had the vehicle for a week, so it's possible that they did inspect it but I know they said nothing was actually 'changed'.

Inspection of the wetbelt is basically almost the same amount of work as replacing the wetbelt. If the engine is disassembled this far for inspection of the wetbelt I would have replaced the wetbelt at the same time. At this stage replacing the wetbelt is only a small job.

no way what so ever did they inspect the timing belt. as wilko points out, its a major job , and will back up what he says also about using flushing agents, will damage the belt. never, never use an engine flush. they havent got a clue what there doing.

Cheers for the responses.

Needless to say I won't be taking the car back to where I got it!

Obviously taking it to another garage isn't going to tell me much more about the potential damage they may have caused.

An update a week later, I've noticed the noise is returning. I've uploaded a video from the noise before it was in the garage for the work, any advice is appreciated.

Another update:

The garage have taken it back in for the mechanic to have another look into. They didn't fix the issue last time, so I'm not holding out much hope of them doing it this time.

I picked the car up on the 25th August, and since then it has been in for a week (plus however long this time). If they don't rectify the issue this time, where do I stand with what I can demand? Ask them to contact Ford and for them to send a mechanic down to inspect, or last resort is reject the car all together?

Cheers!

Have you checked to see if it's something loose in the engine compartment. Many years ago I had a Toyota MR2 that used to randomly make a similar noise, turned out to be a loose engine hoist bracket (not sure what they are called really ) the thing that could be used to lift the engine out of the car.

There were two or three of them bolted to the engine block and one of them had a slighly loose bolt that allow the bracket to vibrate causing the ticking sound. Sometimes it would wedge itself tight so you didn't hear anything until it got dislodged again.

Thanks for the reply Blatto.

I haven't checked that, so might well have a look.

The garage have had the car for a week, and are unable to diagnose any problem whatsoever, so I'm going to keep hold of it and see how things go. The advice on Fiesta Faction forum is that the noise I'm hearing is normal for the EcoBoost 1.0 so think I'll just get used to it!
