Mass market LED headlights aren't yet up to standard, there are some in a few high end cars already though so it should filter down in a few years, I would recommend simply upgrading to better halogen bulbs such as some Osram nightbreakers.

I really like Phillips used some on my old zetec s tdci also got new pair on my st now I went with the WHITE VISION they are great

I'd go for Philips XTremevision plus or Osram nightbreakers instead (both are halogen). Most of the LED kits I've seen have overheating issues, and frankly output less light than a good halogen bulb.

I have no experience with LED headlights, but a lot of experience with LEDs generally.

An Osram Nightbreaker halogen is specced to give 1500 lumens from a 55W bulb. This will need about a 15W LED to give the same 1500 lumens. (Cree's latest & most efficient LEDs give about 100 lumens per watt.)

The filament in a halogen runs at way over 2000C, and the quartz envelope runs at maybe 300C or more. This makes it easy to get rid of all that heat by natural convection. The problem is that LEDs are limited to about 150C junction temperature, and have reduced efficiency and lifetime even at this temperature. And that is the temperature of the very small light emitting volume inside the LED chip. The chip must be cooler, and the pcb or mounting base cooler still.

In short, if the car headlamp assembly is not designed for LEDs, then any LED bulbs fitted will either have to be low power (and dim) or will have very short lifetimes. I would expect a 15W automotive LED, designed for car underbonnet temperature environments, to have an aluminium or copper finned heatsink, and probably a cooling fan. Without that, it has little chance of a long, bright life.

LED headlight bulbs are now at a stage where they are brighter and project further that halogen bulbs..
