groaning engine

I have had my C-Max 2.0 TDCi powershift for nearly 2 years now.  Its been faultless normally, but over the past few months, I have noticed that when the engine is switched off, I hear what can only be described as a groaning, or even mooing noise.  If I switch off after the engine has been idling for a while, it dosnt tend to do this.  ( If anyone has ever had one of those tubes that you turn over and it makes a noise, its almost exactly like that)

I had the car in for a service and everything was OK, but the garage suggested its likely the boost control solonoid.  Is this a likely explanation, and if so, can these be repaired/cleaned, or is it a new part.

Apart from this, the car runs fine, returns around 47mpg.  ( I mainly drive motorways, which is why i got a diesel!!)

Thanks

could it not be as simple as a noisy fan bearing?
