V.Loud Rear Humming Noise

Featured Replies

Hello There,

Currently driving a 2004 Ford Fiesta Flame 1.4. I am not sure what I have done to the car although I have noticed that recently there is a humming noise coming from the rear of the vehicle which gets louder as I increase speed (to the point it's louder than the music). The noise is not effected if lowering the clutch, only when I reduce speed. I have been on a long drive with it and then checked the wheel bearings to check to see if they are over heating which they are not.

What else could this be? I literally plan on selling the car next week to upgrade and don't want to pass out broken goods but at the same time I don't want to spend much money!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Aarron

a wheel bearing can be loud without overheating, does the loudness change with weight on the vehicle? eg. if you go along a fast undulating road does the sound change as you leave a hump (and the weight is kind of lessened on the wheels) and get louder when the weight is greatest on the wheels coming to end of next dip.  also jack up car and spin wheel. any play? any roughness as it spins?  other than wheel bearing the only other thing i can think of is something rubbing on wheel or road like a badly fitted mudflap or one of these antistatic strips rubbing on road

Check the air pressure in the tyres and how worn are they? They will drone as they wear.
