2008 Fiesta 1.6 TDCI Zetec S Cutting Out

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New here and not having a great first Ford experience!

I purchased a 2008 Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 TDCi (one of the last of the MK6s) back in September. It was fine for about two weeks (one full tank of Shell V Power diesel). After this two weeks and with the fuel tank getting low (indicated 30 miles range) the car conked out in traffic. It then restarted with no problem. This happened 3 times within a couple of minutes. Luckily I was close by a petrol station, then just as I was driving onto the forecourt the car conked out completely and would not restart. I ended up pushing it to one of the pumps and putting £20 of diesel in it, hoping this would solve the problem, but the car would still not start.

Annoyingly I was actually on my way to my garage to get the cam belt changed and was only a few roads 5 but they didn't have any means of towing it so I had to join the AA! Half an hour or so later the AA man arrives and to my annoyance, the car started first time he tried. Looking quite smug with himself he told me I'd just run it out of diesel and it was fine, however then the car cut out again. It restarted multiple times but kept cutting out after 5-10 seconds of running.

Long story short he towed me to my garage, where they replaced the crankshaft sensor and the fuel filter and the car seemed to run ok again. Then that evening after about a 10 mile drive the car conked out again. What was odd about it this time was that it seemed to be having random bursts of acceleration without me adjusting my foot on the pedal at all, particularly when pulling away from lights etc. I then took it back to the garage who pretty much just said they don't know.

Since then the car has never refused to start, however the cutting out continues, with it alway restarting, albeit with a struggle (loud clicking noises and rough initial idle) sometimes. What I find odd about the whole thing is that when the car is running it drives completely fine, plenty of power etc with no warning that it might cut out, there's never been any warning lights or anything, it just dies, making the car dangerous and undrivable.

What I do know is the car was remapped in July, according to the receipt this includes a EGR and DPF (I didn't think it even had one) removal. Is this likely to be causing the symptoms i'm experiencing? I also have a receipt for a new high pressure fuel pump, turbo, and fuel tank last year, potentially showing the previous owner has had problems with this before?

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm torn between trying to get it fixed knowing that as a diesel it's unlikely to be cheap, or just cutting my loses and getting shot of it. I now have another car so it's more of a damage limitation exercise!

Any help will be much appreciated!

Jack

If you bought it from a garage take it back and complain or better still get a refund. If the previous keeper had the turbo changed it could be the oil pipe was not changed and the engine not flushed out and the turbo is seizing up again

any fault codes? low fuel pressure fault code?

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately it was a private sale! Doesn't seem turbo related to me as it still goes like it should when it's running?

There was a fault code for low fuel pressure, what could this relate? Air in the system somewhere maybe? I've sat there holding the revs at 3,000 for nearly half an hour (didn't cut out once) so would have thought it would have flushed out if this were the case?

It only seems to cut out whilst driving, not whilst at standstill.
