Difference Between DAB1 & DAB2?

Featured Replies

Not sure if I'm being thick here lol...  I can't find the difference between the two.  I thought it was just for extra presets (as if anyone needs that many) but I can hardly find any stations on DAB1 so tried DAB2...and found loads available on there...

Having to keep it on DAB2 for the stations I want will be nearly as annoying as leaving the volume on an odd number...

Slightly off topic but the USB input is also amazing...all my CDs on one tiny lump that won't get in the way, rattle or get scratched...

Dab1 and 2 are the same. Are you scanning for the channels?

Are you sure they're both the same?  That's really weird if so.  Yeah I'm scanning for stations, but can only pick up one or two distant stations on DAB1, even manually scanning it won't pick anything extra up.  Yet on DAB2 there are loads of stations I can scan through.

Are you looking through all the channels. There are many sections of dab stations e.g bbc , d1 , Wales , Devon etc. In my car you press left and right when looking at the dab stations. On the touchscreen sync you have to use next /previous I think.

I'll have to have another fiddle with it tomorrow.  Don't remember seeing any 'regional' type choices so if that's the case it might be stuck in one of them.

am i sure?? lol

Even you must make the odd mistake...I'm yet to see one so far though.

I just can't see what I can be doing wrong with DAB1 if I'm getting DAB2 to work fine but will have another look tomorrow.  I feel like my nan trying to work out the TV remote...

I think you're looking at DAB like it's standard FM where each station is a seperate frequency.
DAB is a digital signal, one frequency can carry multiple channels simultaneously therefore use less bandwidth.
All the BBC channels will be on the same frequency / block etc..

I had DAB on the Vectra 5 years ago but don't remember it being anywhere near this complicated lol.

Part of the issue here was my impatience.  There are more stations on DAB1 but only after it told me there was no reception...a few seconds later it started seeking again and found more.  I was just switching over at that point before.  It still hasn't found the ones I have on DAB2 though lol.  Is there a way I can search for a specific station rather than waiting for it to scroll through each one?  FM was much easier, I know the numbers for the FM stations lol.

A good source of DAB allocation blocks for reference which should help to make finding specific channels easier-

They are also trialling DAB+ in 8 regions at present but these need a different DAB receiver or an add-on adaptor.

Cheers Clive, very helpful!

DAB 2 doesn't exist its actually DAB+ In UK at present for all intents and purposes for the end use we don't notice any difference between DAB and DAB+.

They are different and one day DAB will go, and most cars that had DAB in the early days will have no radio. (anything circa 2005 to 2010).

As an aside, 2012 was the original KILL date for all UK FM radio broadcasts, but they bottled it, stating until more then x% of UK homes had a DAB tuner they wouldn't do it.  And moved the kill date to 2015.  BMW started std UK fitment of DAB tuners across the range in 2011, on a Merc its still optional.

An upgraded version of the system was released in February 2007, called DAB+, which uses the HE-AAC v2 audio codec. DAB is not forward compatible with DAB+, which means that DAB-only receivers are not able to receive DAB+ broadcasts. However, broadcasters can mix DAB and DAB+ programs inside the same transmission and so make a progressive transition to DAB+. DAB+ is approximately twice as efficient as DAB, and more robust.

So are we saying that DAB2 is actually DAB+ or will both DAB1&2 pick up the DAB+ signals?

They really need to increase DAB signal strength before killing off FM.  I've got 2 DAB radios indoors and now the one in the Focus as well, signal is poor on all of them!

I've had to turn off the DAB servicelink because it keeps searching for stronger signals every five minutes, which is more annoying than the occasional gravelly noise lol.

dab2 is the same as dab 1 its, different number for the same thing. basically you can preset 10 on dab, and another 10 on dab2. that is if you can find enough to work. tonight i used all my preset stations  off dab 1 and searched on dab 2 for them, sucessfully.

I cant wait for my Twenty20 brake leds to turn up!  My DAB hasn't worked properly since changing the rear clusters to led, but the reverse, indicators and fogs don't affect it.

I miss Absolute 80's.  Yes, I know - I was born in the wrong decade...

I've got Heart 80s on atm...  I wasnt born until the 90s lol...  I'll listen to most things tbf though, not keen on having so much choice with DAB and USB as well as FM now, I'm too indecisive!

Lol! I was born in the late 80's so all the best music ever written was made before I was born =]  Missing my Nik Kershaw!

On the upside, my USB stick has a crapload of Queen, RHCP and No Doubt so that's not too bad =]

Lol...I'll guess you were born '85...maybe 2nd November... :ninja:

They have a quiz on Heart 80s in the morning...  I can get more of the answers right from before I was born than the people in their 40s phoning in!

Accidentally stumbled upon Absolute (non 80s) yesterday and had a blast of 90s stuff that I'd forgotten about...the audio is one of the best improvements between mk2.5 and mk3 so far I think.  Not sure how I ever managed with just FM and about 10 recorded CDs ratting around as the mk2 used to scratch the discs lol. :whistling1:
