Ecoboost overheating issue?

Featured Replies

I was sat in slow moving traffic today. The outside temperature was 5c, so hardly a warm day.

The traffic moved a foot or two every 30 seconds and I was stuck in it for around half an hour.

I looked at my dashboard and saw the temperature needle was past half way and just under the overheat area. This is the first time it’s done this.

I’m aware of the hose issues with the ecoboost engine but my hose appears to have been changed already.

When I got moving again the temperature started dropping slowly. My engine seemed slightly more sluggish at first though while it was still high, as if the turbo wasn’t kicking in, in second gear.

When I got home I saw the coolant was between min and max but there wasn’t any sound of a fan at all. I presume I should hear a fan whirring, even with the engine off?

The coolant appeared to be entering the coolant reservoir in a weird way too. Not sure if this is normal but it was bubbling in. I’ve uploaded that to YouTube.

So I’m not sure if it’s a fault with the fan, an issue with the coolant or if it’s the dreaded hose issue.

Any ideas anyone?

Forgot to add, when I put the cold blowers on they were warm. Even with air con on I couldn’t get cold air.

That would scare me. I have seen posts saying that there's a pump that cools it down when you stop if that's any help.

Sounds like the fan isn't working. Now it's cooled down , with engine running put the Aircon on and have a look under bonnet to see if coolant fan is turning?

I waited till this morning to use it again. Cold morning and not used for a day or so.

I started the engine and turned the air con on. I can see a large fan and a small fan at the front of the car - neither span up at all and both just sat still.

Are you thinking a fuse or another issue?

Seems the Zetec focus has an issue with relays on the fans. Mine’s an ecoboost but I suspect it’s similar around the fans.

I’ll see if I can work out the fuses but as both fans have stopped I suspect it’s going to be a wiring or relay issue unless anyone else has any thoughts?
