1.6 Diesel Focus mk3 loosing coolant?

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2011 Ford Focus Zetec model. Car was grand for first few months until an injector went, it seems to be problem after problem after this getting very low mpg towards standard, radio system not working constantly cutting in and out bluetooth not working. Latest problem with the car is, it is loosing coolant no signs of patches on the ground or anything like that. We brought the car back to the dealership we bought from and pur response was "you are lying". You can visibly see how much coolant was lost after a drive. I'm just enquiring is this a common fault for a focus to loose this much coolant?

It is definitely not normal to lose coolant. And, as far as I have seen, head gaskets are not a common fault on Ford diesels, at least not if the right antifreeze is used.

It must be going somewhere. Coolant tank (reservoir) leaks quite common on the Focus. Cardboard under the tank can test for this. Check all hoses for tell tale signs of the residues from evaporating anti-freeze & water. Have a good look, and sniff, for leaks inside the car in the front footwells, for leaks from the heater matrix. You will smell the antifreeze.

Check the antifreeze. It should be a pretty, clear pinky orange colour. If blue, green or opaque, then there could be a problem. The Ford pink OAT antifreeze protects against corrosion for over 10 years, normal blue antifreeze lasts two years max, and aluminium engines (like the 1.6TDCI) can be very prone to corrosion of the cylinder head joint.

Check the oil, under the filler cap, but also inside the crankcase ventilation hoses. Any grey emulsion will indicate water getting into the oil. Head gasket would be the most likely suspect here, oil cooler is possible but less likely.

Smell the exhaust when idling hot after a good run. White smoke with that antifreeze smell will indicate a head gasket leak, or just possibly EGR cooler leak.

If you bought the car with the wrong anti-freeze in it, you should have a very good case against the dealer if it has a head gasket leak.

Thank you for your fast response!

antifreeze is clear pinky orange colour, we are experiencing strong antifreeze smell from the smoke. We asked dealer could it be a possible egr fault and mechanic stated "my 2011 Focus dont have a Egr"

attached is antifreeze levels within 24 hours.

I have yet to hear about a recent (post 2000) Ford diesel without an EGR, All the 1.6TDCIs (Mk2 or Mk3) I have heard of have them. And a lot of people are selling them. A couple of photos of the Mk3 EGR are below, but it is hidden down the back of the engine somewhere, so not easy to locate. Almost all diesel EGRs have a water cooled pipe to cool down the exhaust gas before it gets to the valve. Leaks here are I think very rare, but not impossible.

With anti-freeze smell from the exhaust, I think head gasket leak is most likely. But with a dealer swearing black is white, it is going to be an uphill struggle. I would not want such a bunch of cowboys touching the internals of my engine, anyway!

The grey emulsion inside the cooler parts of the engine like ventilation hoses is still a good test, EGR cooler leaks should not contaminate the oil, but a HG leak usually does, as the water remains pressurised when the engine is stopped, and it then gets into the cylinders, and can get past the pistons into the oil.

I would recommend investigating your rights to get your money back, if at all possible. You may have to pay a decent garage to investigate and make a proper report.
