Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 12plate hesitation and rattle under load

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Sorry, first post and it's a troubleshoot...

We have a 50k mile 12 plate mk2 1.0 Ecoboost.

My wife notices a few days ago that the car starts to judder (she used the word kangarooing) but intermittently and only really when just ambling along.

I took the car out for a 'spirited' drive yesterday and I can say when being driven hard there seems to be no issue but I did indeed notice that at 30mph in 4th with foot lightly on throttle the car started to judder. Add to this the fact that during light acceleration and deceleration when engine braking there's a kind of grinding noise coming from the engine bay.

My thoughts are 2 separate issues, first being coil packs... Second being loose exhaust shield...?

Anyone care to add to my guesses?

Did check the test setting and noticed Dtc C19700 but Google searching yielded zero results for this so could be a red herring...

Took it to a local garage today :

Looks like when it was last serviced (at Ford I'll add) someone damaged the oil filter. In this inclement weather the increased oil pressure had caused a hole to appear in the filter and leak oil all over the engine bay.

The hesitation was caused by the VVT pulley not being able to advance or ***** due to the low oil pressure, causing a VVT rattle.

NEW filter and oil have cured all symptoms, now we're starting the process of trying to get some kind of compensation from Ford for the possibility of permanent internal damage to the engine or turbo. Thankfully they have already admitted liability and have paid for the work so far.

Great fun. Main dealers, just cowboys with financial backing.

To be honest it sounds like the oil filter wasn't changed for a very long time and it collapsed in its housing.  Its unlikely the engine or turbo suffered as a result of this.  If the engine runs quietly now or as quietly as a 1.0 ecoboost can its all good.
