Ecoboost overboost ?

Featured Replies

Sorry more questions...

I used to have fiesta ecoboost 100 ps and now focus ecoboost 125ps.

I seem to remember the 100 didn't have overboost but 125 does.

Could anyone give me a quick description of how and when this kicks in and how much extra power it is ?

I know there is a cool down period after use.

Thanks.

Ive asked a similar question before about the 1.6 TDCI 109ps. Is the 109 INCLUDEING the overboost or excluding it. Never did get an answer.

Bloomin amazing though, the car with deliver about 2.5bar of boost on mine, interestingly the ECU only reports a max of 1.5 bar.

If you accelerate in third to about 2000RPM (diesel) then release the peddle for a fraction of a second before mashing the accelerator the acceleration is fantasitic :)

yours being a petrol you will need to experiment with it but that's the gist.

Ive had partial boosts about to around 1.7-2bar from a stand still, usually from hard acceleration at a junction but the full 2.5 bar I only get using the above method.

Not sure if its the same for the ecoboost but experiment and see. just mind that the ECU reported boost pressure might not show you the true picture, if you see it flat line before you "feel" it stop growing then it might just be cutting off the sensor. as I said, mine refuses to report any more than 1.5 but I know for a fact it hits 2.5 :)

Its quite simple.  There are normal levels of boost for general driving.  Above that, overboost gives a higher boost pressure, extra ignition advance, and extra fuelling for a strictly controlled/limited period of time.  It allows extra occasional performance without having to do an wholesale engine redesign.

The diesel doesn't have a true overboost function, due to the different physics of compression ignition and lack of ignition advance.  A Focus 109 diesel is 109 PS all day long.

The 125 HP and 140 HP version of the Focus MK3/MK3.5  1.0 ECOboost have the OverBoost functionality.

The 125 HP version has 170 Nm of torque. At full throttle the torque output is raised to 200 Nm for a maximum period of 30 seconds. However in when accelerating and changing gears the OverBoost functionality is available for a longer period because it resets if the throttle is released during shifting.

Note that the 1.0 ECOboost usually outputs more power and torque than Ford specifies. The Dutch equivalent of the Auto Express magazine recently tested a stock 125 HP Focus MK3.5  1.0 ECOboost running on standard 95 octane fuel. The car was tested on a rolling road that is owned by an independent motorsport company. This stock car outputs 134 HP and 192 Nm of torque (no OverBoost).

that's not true, the car will only produce 1.5bar under normal conditions, 2.5 under certain situations
