Installing DRL’s

Featured Replies

I’ve ordered some little DRL’s for my car. The installation guide says to wire the negative wire to the battery and the positive wire to the ignition fuse box. Can anyone give me some guidance on what I’m looking for please. I know nothing about wiring.

If you know nothing about wiring, it's best to get someone who does to help you when you fit them.

Some DRL kits have a voltage-sensing controller, meaning they will only turn on when the engine is running and the alternator is generating charge. These kits can be wired directly to the battery via a fuse.

Other kits don't have this controller, so usual practice is to have an ignition-switched supply to switch the DRL circuit on. On the mk2, there is a circuit in the cabin fusebox which can be used- it's intended to activate the low beams at reduced voltage for scandinavia. This can be modified to drive DRLs and will do what you want.

DRLs are too bright for night driving, and must be wired to switch off or dim when you turn any other lights on. If you're not using the modified Ford DRL output, then a standard relay must be wired in so it breaks the circuit when the side lights are switched on. Don't omit this step and drive around dazzling other drivers.

More to them than I thought. Thanks.

Which drl's did u buy? I used a drl control module from ebay to control mines until one of the angel eyes broke. It requires you to connect it to the battery then a white wire had to be tapped into dipped so the Drl would dim to 50% when the headlights turned on then the Drl wires connected to other wires from the box it's pretty simple that way. It even had the option to tap into indicators for sequential drl's I had some once but they lasted about a month lol

Just some cheapo ones from eBay. They are powered by ignition source so they’ll be on all the time. Never occurred to me that they turn off with the headlights. Don’t think I’ll bother with them now. Too much hassle for £7.50
