Changed some ball joints

Featured Replies

Had some movement in both front lower ball joints. Decided to replace just the joints as the arms/bushings were still good.

If you're considering the same, consider just replacing the arm instead. Ford, in their infinite wisdom decided to rivet the original joints to the arm. So really, the arm has to come off so you can drill them out. When it comes to drilling them out, they appear to have used adamantium rivets- really hard! Didn't quite drill centrally which left a small amount in the hole- after heating and beating they finally gave way.

At least the new joints came with bolts so they went back on in about 5 minutes.

I’ve always found these joints very easy to do on any brand of car and have come up with my own technique which works very well.

i use a grinder to bring the rivet head as flush as possible to the arm without damaging the surface. The heat created in doing so highlights the outline of the rivet. Automatic centre punch and then drill with 3mm pilot first and then a larger drill to suit, just slightly small than the rivet. Sometimes bits of the rivet will come through with the drill otherwise a small chisel to punch it through. Grinding and drilling usually takes me 15 mins.

I used the same technique of progressively enlarging the hole. But for some reason the remaining bits of rivet were really stuck in the hole and refused to be knocked through. Got them out eventually but after a disproportionate amount of effort.
