Focus MK3 screen washer pathetic!!

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hard to tell as I didn’t really notice the issue until recently but the freezing weather a few weeks ago could be related to the problem.

Both front washer sprays have become so weak they barely even make it off the bonnet let alone onto the screen. You can hear the pump working so it cant be a fuse & the washer bottle is full. Ive checked the jets & they aren’t blocked. Rear jet produces no water at all.

Its a 2014 reg [had it for over a year with no probs so far except the typical boot leak!!]]  so it seems odd enough muck would have collected in the bottle to clog the pump that quickly, so before I remove the wheel, arch liner & wash bottle I wondered if anyone else has had this issue & got a simple fix.

Thanks.

was the weather freezing when you had the washer problems, or is it still the same now the weather is a little warmer. if it only happend when it was really cold and freezing it because your screen wash is too weak and froze in the pipes. easy fix is get the concentrate screenwash and pour it in neat. look for screenwash that will do -10. i`ve been getting mine from b&m shops £1.49 a ltr bottle

I've been using Halfraud's £4.50 5L berry screen wash since I bought mine. Never had an issues, even in the cold weather.

I also use the Halfords berry stuff without an issue.  However the front jets froze a couple of times, and needing defrosting with the front screen.  I always had water from the rear jet.

If you're using cheap screenwash it can congeal and clog the filter over the pump which sounds like what's happened here.  Same happened on my mk2 but I'd never used any cheap stuff, must have been residual from the previous owners but it took a couple of years before it suddenly reduced to just a dribble from the washers!

I'm also on the berry stuff, smells great!

Cheap screenwash or the cr4ppy stuff caused me some mad issues on my Fiesta had to pretty much take out the whole system and clean it for it to work again

Thanks for those hints. The jets are bad even though its no longer frozen, but somehow its been since the frosts, hence i wondered if there was any connection. It’s been serviced by qwikfit so i imagine its had cheap screenwash, and Ive been using Halfords own brand. So maybe there’s a congealed mess on the filter. Ill have to try accessing the bottle with the wheel off & liner removed. The clip on YouTube says its possible but they have removed the front bumper first.

Often just using hot water in the washer bottle is enough to clear any gunge, just run the screenwash out then add hot bu not boiling water and run the washers, normally clears very quickly

It's easy enough to remove the bumper anyway, doesn't need jacking up and only takes 10 mins.

Changed the pump & all seems fine. I’ll tinker with the old one later to see what the issue was.
