Focus Mk 2 2005 Gear selector problem

I  have a Focus Mk 2 (2005) 1.6 TDCi  which I have had from new. Very recently I have , occasionally, been experiencing  difficulty in selecting 1st and 2nd gears. It  works perfectly for 95% of the time and then when I select first gear I find I am in 3rd and when selecting 2nd gear I find I'm in 4th. I have had the clutch checked and that is fine so it must be something to do with the selector mechanism. Has anybody any idea what the problem is and is there an easy fix?
