Tyres?

Featured Replies

I took my car into the local garage for an alignment today, and I get a phone call saying my drivers side tyres is cut to the chords on the inside. They’re only 18 months old, and nothing was picked up on the MOT back in November. Could poor alignment really cause that much damage or could it have been a potholes doing or have I been taken for a ride by there garage?

Poor alignment wouldn't cause it to get cut. You've caught something on the road.

I'd just ask to be shown it, they can lift it up and let you see for yourself then. Or they can take the wheel off for you.

Think I know where this happened now, have submitted a claim to the council.

think you will need some photographic evidence, not just the road, but the damage to the tyre.

Whilst I have heard of councils paying for the whole cost of a new tyre, legally they can make a deduction for how worn the tyre is, eg. if half worn than half the cost. Some councils seem to pay up easier than others.

Don't forget councils are not automatically liable to pay for damage to tyres caused by the road in every circumstance.   If anyone thinks they should be, how much extra council tax are council tax payers prepared to pay to fund this? If we want every road to be like a bowling green it will cost a lot of money and there is no way for the council to get that money other than charging more for council tax.

I don't work for a council by the way.

I had plenty of photographic evidence, and the claim was only for £100 so if they reject it I shan't complain. The pothole has been marked on fixmystreet  for 3 months now, but I couldn't avoid it as there was oncoming traffic!
