MK2 Focus Won't Start

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is a battery related issue.

The car has just come out of the garage and everything was fine (two brushes at the rear needed replacing and they put two new tyres on).

Have been driving it about 20 miles a day for the past week.  Came home on Saturday, everything was fine.

Come to start it today (Monday) and it wouldn't start.

It unlocked okay, put the key in, foot on clutch, turn the key and it sounded like it had a flat battery.  Turned off, turned the key again and just a ticking.  All the normal lights on the dash were on.  Tried with a code reader but it doesn't find any faults.  It now sounds like a small machine gun when I turn the ignition, like it's the starter motor?  Here's a video:

It looks like the lights are flashing but in reality, they aren't.

Checked fuses, all in the engine compartment seem to be okay.  The only thing that is different now, is the radio won't turn on, when before it was fine.

I have next to no knowledge of cars.  I don't know how to check if the battery "reads" okay - although I do have a multimeter.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry if links like this aren't allowed - it's my first post and couldn't think of another way.

Pretty sure this is the issue I had and it turned out to be the fuel pump (although mine is a petrol engine). Is fuel getting to the fuel filter/engine?

Sounds like a flat battery

try jump starting it, then you`ll know if its time to invest in a new batt :w00t:

Sorry - I posted in a panic.

Turns out it was the battery.  Still had the original Ford one in, so 11 years finally killed it.

The guy at Halfords said it gave 10v instead of the usual 12v and was supposed to be giving something over 300 (?) but the battery gave just 32.

First time of fitting a new battery - go me!  Although when connecting the negative at the very end, I did get a couple of sparks :/
