MK2 Boot Lid Won't Open

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

sorry if this has been asked a lot before but the boot lid on my MK2 Focus has recently stopped opening when I press the button on the boot. I've also tried locking/unlocking the car and trying again after pressing the open/lock door button on the key as well as the same with the dedicated boot lid button on the car key but with no joy.

When pressing the boot lid button on the tailgate a click can be heard but nothing happens.

Can someone advise how best to troubleshoot this please? Also can I open the boot from the inside to diagnose further? After putting down the back seats I can make out the area where the latch is located and may be accessible potentially...though this was in low light conditions and I wasn't too close to the boot inside panel so I'm not sure if manual open options are available from inside the car.

Thanks for any help.

Hi mate

you won’t be able to do anything from inside the boot

when mine played up it was water inside the switch I dried it all off cleaned it and put it back and it’s still working.Theres a grey piece of rubber over it I’ve left that off,maybe that was holding the water in

Thanks MrRedman,

I'll have a look at this tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that will be the problem with mines too and I can use my boot again. I'll let you know if I have any joy :-)

Mine was stuck for a while.  In the end I managed to open it by pushing down on the boot lid while lifting the switch at the same time and it worked - you might want to try that.  Been ok ever since and that was about 8 years ago.

Thanks for the suggestion guys but no luck with pushing down on the boot lid and pressing the button hoping for a release. Out of interest MrRedman what tools are needed to get the button off to have a look at it. I've tried a pry tool and a small flat edge screwdriver around the edges of the plastic button to try and pop it out but it doesn't seem to want to come off. Is there a specialist tool needed to remove it or is there a specific area that needs to be wedged to get it out?

I think I levered it out with a small screwdriver

If it doesn't work with the button on the remote either it won't be the boot lid button.

A TX40 and TX50 are available to purchase single from Halfords and fit a socket wrench.

With both sizes you can strip the entire interior

Anyway;

The wife got my jacket stuck in the latch before which prevented the boot opening,

I got in through the back seat and popped off the two little square caps on the bottom plastic panel; to reveal two TX40 torx bolts.These bolts hold the bottom latch;

When the bolts are removed; pull out the two plastic plugs holding the plastic boot panel in place undo both and the boot will lift up but latch and plastic panel will still be in the door.

You can then remove the rear panel from the boot door to remove the boot handle if required.

I can guide you through the process across the week if I get time between work and family I have over 6,000 images of the focus taken apart and rebuilt by myself.

I replaced the boot handle with one which has a built in camera

Hey Lenny thank you for the pictures and advise. I'll get the tools and have an inspection this weekend. I may come back to you if I'm stuck but hopefully it will be straightforward enough :-)

Hi Lenny,

sorry to have left this so long before picking back up. I've not been using my car much for the last 6 weeks but have it back on the road daily now. If I manage to get the boot lid open following your steps, to diagnose the issue, would I be able to close the door back over again if I had to. I'll be driving quite a lot the next few weeks so I'm a bit worried I get the boot open, can't discover the problem and then can't lock the door again lol.

I'm not sure if closing the lid automatically will catch the boot latch or whatever and keep the door closed.

Sorry if you haven't had the same problem as me you may not know what I am blabbering on about. I'm not that technically minded with cars but my brother is. I'm impressed you have 6000 images of a strip down. Do you have them hosted online anywhere?
