Mk2 focus 1.6

Featured Replies

Hi all new here have  not got a clue how this work. Lol

I have a focus 1.6 Mk2 and when I am driving it a d it get warmed up the revs shoot up to 8000rpm and speedo shoots up to 140mph and will only be doing 30mph the radio volume goes loud when it does it too. Oh a d everyone it does it I lose power and car bunny hops about. Is there a. Easy fix or is it buggered. Thank you in advance Tim.

Sounds like a classic speedo sensor error, it's more common on a mk1 model tbh but I believe I'm correct in saying that some mk2 engines still had a vss fitted?
Usually the speedo drops to 0 but the revs climbing and stuttering are a classic.
The fuel system gets confused and only supplies enough fof an idling engine so fuel starvation kicks in.
The radio volume increasing is a big pointer, auto volume levelling set on the radio to overcome road noise at higher speeds is tricked by the speedo sensor and therefore raises the volume to compensate.
What year is your vdhicle?

Thank you for the reply it is a 2003 model. Thanks Tim

Isn't 2003 a MK1? The MK2 didn't come in until early 2005...

Is it an easy job to do my self or would it be a garage job thanks you in advance Tim

If by speed sensor people mean the crankshaft position sensor, I had the same happen on my MK2. Cause of it's location I had a garage do it as access is restricted without a ramp/decent jack and space to do it. Not sure where it is on the MK1 though.

Ideally you want to get the error code with a code scanner to be certain what the issue is (assuming the car gives a code)

Speed sensor in on top of the gearbox.

Best to check the connector and wiring prior to swapping out the sensor itself.

The wiring is a 5 minute check whereas the sensor swap can be a pig of a job and takes an hour plus to do.

Plenty of youtube videos in multiple languages showing the job.

I had mine done at a garage, if they break it then they have to put it right.

Robbing beggars.
I bet it doesn't come with a new mounting pin either.

Doesn't appear to, it's ridiculous. A genuine Crank sensor for my MK2 is about £40 from the same seller
