Mk 2.5 timing belt.

Just had a quote for a new timing belt on my 2010 zetec S currently on 66k.

The price they gave me was including timing belt, water pump, aux belt, anti freeze.

£339 inc vat.

Firstly is that a fair price?

Secondly, does anyone know if my car actually has to have water pump done with the cambelt or not?

I don't know if the water pump is timing belt driven or not.    What I will say is genuine ford water pumps can last a very long time. If you have it replaced now with a cheaper one, the cheaper one might fail before the original one might have done if left on there, so if you have a perfectly good genuine one on there I would be thinking of not replacing it unless you are replacing it with a top quality one.   Of course what the garage tell you they are going to put on there and what they actually do put on there is not easy to check.

There or there about, its perhaps edging on the expensive side but not by a lot. It probably depends on which engine you have.

Do you have to do the pump? nope, is it wise to do it? yup. To do it on its own will firstly mean having to do the whole thing again anyway, but also you run the risk of dumping metal in to the cooling system.

But dont use cheap parts!

Thanks for your help, I've just had a price from another garage of £338 so it does look to be about right.

Car is just coming up to 8 years old with 66k on the clock is that about the right time to have it done would you say?

"about the right time to have it done would you say?"  not sure if you mean the belt  or the belt and water pump.

I don't know what engine you have. Ford service schedule for some engines for belt says 10 years old or 125k miles whatever comes first . however it has been known for them to fail earlier so it's a gamble.  I first did my Fiesta 1.6tdci belt at about 118k miles. My brother has the car now, now gone over 160k miles without the water pump being changed. 

I changed the timing belt on my son's VW Lupo the other day. 14 years old. 69k miles. the belt did look quite poor with cracking of the rubber. Probably more down to age than miles, I did not change the water pump as it was OK. But as I do the work myself it does not cost be extra labour if I have to do the pump separately at a later date.    But if paying for labour, there is a fair bit of labour involved in doing it again as a separate job as it is removing all the same bits again including the belt.

which was exactly the age / milage i had mine done last year.....

price seems fair if theyre using decent brand parts.

its about a £100 cheaper than fords dealership standard price for the same work - £440

you could in all fairness leave it another year without any risk , but if you got the money & motivation to do it and are planning on keeping the car for a few more years then it wont hurt to do it early

indeed, which Is why ford recommend that you start thinking about it at around 75k. The way ive always looked at it is this. up to 75k you should have no bother. after 75k you slowly increase the chances of it going wrong up to 125k, after which point ford suggests that the odds are its going to go sooner rather than later. So basically the longer you leave it the more likely its going to go wrong (which might not be the belt, it could be a pulley, tensioner, belt or pump, each of which could be catastrophic for your engine. If it were me, id leave yours a little longer, I did my focus around 80k and the Mondeo is getting done at 100k but at the end of the day, its your car you need to weigh up the risk / costs 🙂

I've got a 1.6 petrol engine 115bhp zetec s version not sure if it's curated?

Online the only thing I found was the belt was recommended to be changed at 8years old or 100k miles , mine is nearly 8 years old but didn't know if that was right or not?
