Featured Replies

after about five hours i think its the front fogs as when i put multi meter on the 2 wires i get the sound that mean they are shorting

.where do the wires go from the front ? do they go through the fire wall ? has any body had this poblem i need to sort it asap as i suffer arthritis and suffer severe pain and cant aford to pay any one

by the way its a mk2 fl

Most multimeters will register a cold, high power, lamp filament as a short circuit, and buzz. Measuring low resistances like that (under about 2 ohms) is quite hard as contact and meter resistance has a big effect.

I guess you have checked the fuse F116 (or F69 in the older fusebox). If this fuse keeps blowing, disconnect all fog lamps at the connectors on the light fittings, and re-connect each in turn. That might locate a short circuit.

pretty sure the front fog  lights are not tested on older cars before 2018

2. Daytime running lamps and front fog lamps
You need to check DRLs and front fog lamps on vehicles first used from 1 March 2018.

Record a ‘major’ defect if a DRL or fog lamp doesn’t work.

the problem is that the fuse does the front and rear fogs so the rears wont work

Is it possible to disconnect the wiring plugs from the front fog units. I do not know just what the fittings inside the front fogs are like, but it is quite common for the connection springs to the bulb to get bent or displaced enough to make a short circuit. Especially if the bulb is not present.

As you say, there is just the one fuse for front and back fogs. It is only 20A, so high power front fogs could blow it. Filament bulbs take a big current surge when turned on.

If the short circuit is still present with both front fog wiring plugs completely removed, then testing the wiring is needed. I would start by measuring resistance to earth of one of the front fog supply wires with the lighting switch in the off position, and in the fog position. When off, resistance should be high (there is just a little LED indicator in the lamp switch). When in Fog position, the rear fogs lamps are connected to the front ones, so the low resistance of the rear bulbs should be measured at the front wiring plugs.
